Revelations in the Abyss

—

The air tasted of dust and ozone, a metallic tang clawing at Kieran’s tongue as he stepped through the crumbling archway of the forbidden gate. Beyond it, the world folded into shadows—a warped labyrinth of obsidian stone and shifting fog, dripping with a silence so complete it pressed against his eardrums like water.

His breath came shallow. The memories, the whispers from the system’s core, clawed at the edges of his mind, a cyclone of half-truths blurred by time.

The gate’s boundary had slapped him harder than before—flesh bruised, nerves raw. Every step deeper was like wading through ice. He could feel the system, dormant but watchful, simmering beneath his flesh. The Forsaken System wasn’t just a tool. It was a presence, waiting.

A magnetic pulse thrummed beneath the ground—a heartbeat in the dark.

Kieran’s fingers tightened around the hilt of his energy blade, its faint blue glow trembling against the black. This place wasn’t a domain for hunters. It was a memory—not his, but the system’s.

Suddenly, the fog parted. Fractured images flickered like broken holograms hovering before him: a laboratory, sterile and cold; scientists in white coats arguing in hushed tones; a colossal machine humming with raw power that bent reality around it.

"Why show me this?" Kieran breathed.

“No mere coincidence,” the thought whispered—not in his head, but around it—as if the darkness itself spoke.

His heart clenched. The vision sharpened.

A figure emerged amidst the chaos—a woman, her eyes bright with desperation and hope. She cradled a crystalline core, pulsing with radiant blue light. "This system," she said, voice trembling, "was never meant to empower humanity. It was a fail-safe, a cage to control untamable powers lurking beneath the world."

Kieran’s skin crawled. The core she held was the very foundation of what he wielded—the same core he had awakened.

“The ancestors feared the chaos beyond—the Abyss,” the vision continued, “and used this system to bind it. But binding demands sacrifice.”

The hologram shattered like glass.

An icy wind swept through the Abyss, whispering through twisted spires that pierced the void. The system’s energy pulsed fiercely inside him, alive and hungry.

Then, unmistakably—

A voice. Cold, resonant, unmistakably his yet alien.

Kieran...

He froze.

The Forsaken System spoke directly for the first time.

“I’m not your servant,” it said, and the words carved through his mind like a blade. “I am the prison. The key. The reckoning.”

Kieran’s breath caught. The abyssal floor beneath shifted, shadows rippling like a living creature.

“Why are you here, Kieran? What will you sacrifice to rewrite your fate?”

His hand trembled on the energy blade’s hilt.

The line between master and prisoner blurred.

The Abyss waited.
