Chapter 8
---
The roar faded like a storm retreating over the horizon, leaving behind a silence so heavy it pressed against Kieran’s chest. The night air tasted metallic—iron and ozone licking his tongue as if the world itself was bleeding. Smoke curled upward, the acrid burn of scorched concrete mingling with the faint hum of distant sirens threading through the chaos.
Kieran’s knuckles were white, gripping the pistol until his fingers threatened to snap. Sweat beaded his forehead, trickling between strands of matted hair that clung to his skin. His lungs fought for clean air, each breath shallow and quick as adrenaline coiled tight in his veins. Around him, the city teetered on the edge—buildings groaning under the weight of their own fractures, eyes wide with fear peeking from cracked windows.
A sharp crack cut through the stillness—a pane shattering somewhere nearby. Everyone’s trembling game of quiet was over.
“Is this really the end?” The voice was low but edged with something sharper—desperation, disbelief, and the faintest spark of something else.
Kieran scanned the ruined street, spotting her crouched behind a battered car. Lila—her eyes dark pools reflecting the fractured glow of emergency lights, her usual fire dimmed by exhaustion.
His voice was rough when he called out. “No. This isn’t the end. Not yet.”
She gave a shaky nod, fetching a crumpled datapad from her jacket. “I found… something. Records.”
Before Kieran could ask more, her fingers danced across the cracked screen. A pulse of data flared, illuminating the grime on her face, bathing them both in a ghostly blue.
The words flickered, ancient and arcane: Forsaken System Archives – Level Alpha.
Kieran’s breath hitched.
“Wait—this is forbidden,” he whispered, eyes narrowing. The Forsaken System was a legend whispered in back alleys and underground forums, spoken of like a curse. To dig into its origin was to poke a sleeping demon.
But tonight, the world was already burning.
“Tell me what you found,” he demanded.
Lila’s fingers hesitated, then slid across the text, revealing faded schematics and cryptic notations. Lines of code interspersed with strange glyphs, diagrams that showed realms folded over themselves, cloaked in layers of reality. Then, a name: Voss.
A chill crept along Kieran’s spine, colder than any midnight breeze.
“My family…” The word fell from his lips like a verdict.
Lila looked up, her gaze locked onto his. “Your bloodline is tied to this.”
He swallowed hard, the puzzle pieces clicking into place with a sickening clarity. Memories blurred at the edges—fragments of whispered family tales, a grandfather’s hushed warnings, the prickling sensation that something in him was… different. Not merely a hunter, but a key.
Kieran’s pulse thundered in his ears as he scrolled deeper, uncovering an encrypted journal buried within the records. The handwriting was jagged, feverish—the desperate scrawl of someone dancing on the edge of oblivion.
“Read it,” Lila urged.
The words burned like acid on his mind:
*“We created the Forsaken System to save humanity from itself. To give them power beyond their reckoning. But the system is a double-edged blade—every gain carved from sacrifice. We thought we could control it, bend fate to our will.
But it turned.
We did not forge salvation.
We built the chains of enslavement.”*
Kieran’s skin prickled, every hair standing on end like a warning from some primal nerve. The ancient warning echoed in the hollows of his heart, a question clawing up from the abyss:
Had his ancestors been architects of salvation or puppeteers of doom?
He closed the datapad with a sharp snap, the sound deafening in the silence.
“Why hide this?” he demanded, voice a dry rasp.
Lila hesitated, then leaned in, her breath brushing cold against his ear.
“Because the truth…” she said, her words hanging like smoke, “is deadly. And the moment you know it—you become a target for those who want the system’s power at any cost.”
Outside, the rumble of collapsing buildings punctuated the revelation, a reminder that time was bleeding away.
Kieran’s fingers trembled—part fear, part a budding fire stoked deep in his core.
He had to know more. Had to face the shadows clawing at his family name.
Because the Forsaken System was more than a tool.
It was a legacy.
And it was watching.
Watching—and waiting for him to decide:
Was he the savior or the chained?
---
A sudden burst of static hissed through a cracked commlink in Lila’s pocket. She fumbled, eyes darting, heart thudding like a warning drum.
“Kieran,” she said, voice tight. “Someone’s coming.”
A silhouette flickered at the edge of the smoke-draped street—a figure stepping forward, cloaked in darkness yet glowing faintly with unseen power.
The system’s weight settled in Kieran’s gut like a stone.
The past had found him.
And the future was about to fracture.
---
The line between salvation and enslavement blurred with every heartbeat.
---
Did his ancestors create the system to save or enslave humanity?
The question hung in the air like a curse.
The answer was out there.
And it was coming for him.
