Gate Merging

The lock's click still hummed in Kieran’s ears—sharp, metallic, final. The shadows peeled back like spilled ink swirling in water. His heartbeat thundered, a wild, ragged drum in his chest.

He didn’t wait.

The alley’s stale breath hit his face, thick with gasoline and old paper. Night had fallen, but streetlamps flickered erratically like dying fireflies. Somewhere distant, a siren warbled, stretched thin and hopeless.

Kieran’s fingers fumbled the worn grip of his pistol. His breath shuddered—souls’ thread, sacrifice—words from the system’s cruel lips curling in his mind, choking out reason. The weight of failure pressed deep into his ribs, cold and grinding. But surrender wasn’t an option.

A low rumble split the air—a guttural growl that felt like the city itself was exhaling smoke and blood.

He spun, eyes wide.

The brick wall opposite him cracked. A jagged fracture, carbon-black veins splintering out like roots from a dying tree. From the fissure, a bizarre shimmer pulsed—blue and violet light warping space like heat haze.

A gate—one of those monstrous apertures between worlds—was bleeding into reality, edges crackling as if torn by unseen claws.

Kieran’s system interface curled in his mind, a spectral overlay blinking: Gate instability detected. Multiple gate convergence in progress. Hazard: Catastrophic.

He swore under his breath.

“They’re fusing,” he muttered, voice tight, mirroring the electric tension in the air. “No hunter’s ever seen this before.”

A sudden explosion of glass and concrete behind him forced him forward, heart leaping. The city was fracturing. Streets buckled like snake scales, telephone poles arced and snapped. Shouts collided with the roar of collapsing structures.

From the warped gate, a skeletal limb extended, tipped with claws that caught flickers of neon lighting. The figures shifting behind it were different—no longer the twisted beasts from a single dimension. These were hybrids; grotesque amalgams of nightmare genetics.

One step. Then another. The creature emerged, blotting out the streetlight with monstrous bulk.

Its head was a twisted crown of horns and eyes that darted independently, glistening orbs reflecting Kieran’s own pale defiance.

Hunters streamed into the battlefield now. Guns raised, voices barking orders with urgent sharpness—“Keep distance! Don’t engage alone!” But hesitation flashed across their faces, breaths hitching as their bullets shattered against an unseen barrier.

The creature’s body blurred—shifting, refracting reality as if the gate’s energy hummed through its flesh. Tactical strikes hammered, but nothing stuck. One hunter wielded an arc blade, the blade glowing hot enough to melt steel, slashed down—the creature’s hide rippled but remained whole.

Kieran’s mind screamed—protocols, tactics, system commands—but the interface flickered erratically. Sacrifices, sacrifices… the whispered price clawed through his thoughts.

“Focus, damn it,” he growled, gripping his pistol tighter until his knuckles blanched.

The hybrid’s eyes locked onto him, sensing the challenge. Its cocked head moved with a sinister intelligence.

Suddenly, the ground split beneath Kieran’s feet. A jagged crevice swallowed the pavement, fracturing the street in a web of destruction that spread like wildfire. The air thickened—a suffocating scent of ozone and decay.

Around him, hunters faltered, their coordinated defense unraveling under the beast’s relentless march.

Kieran’s system chimed harshly: Warning. Life-critical sacrifice required to stabilize gate convergence.

His stomach twisted into a freezing coil.

He remembered what the shadowed voice said, the price whispered in blood and darkness.

“Power demands your soul’s thread.”

A faint tremor danced along his spine. From the depths of that gnawing fear, resolve burned. If every step forward meant leaving pieces of himself behind… so be it.

“Hunting isn’t about winning,” he whispered. “It’s about surviving long enough to fight another day.”

The creature stalked closer, a nightmare towering over crumbled ruins and twisted metal.

Kieran raised his pistol.

Then everything shifted—the creature’s body began to dissolve into light and shadow, reforming before his horrified eyes into an even more monstrous shape.

Fangs split to reveal multiple rows of dripping jaws. Limbs multiplied grotesquely, writhing like living mass of serpents. The gate’s chaotic energies spiraled around it in violent halos.

It was no longer a gate-born beast.

It was something new.

Something that should not exist.

Hunters froze, murmurs swallowed in gasps.

Kieran’s mind raced, heart thundering in a wild tango of fear and defiance.

And then—

The monstrous hybrid let out a resonant, otherworldly roar, cracking the night sky like a thunderclap.

The city held its breath.

And Kieran’s fingers tightened on the pistol’s cold steel.

Because this was only the beginning.

The gate was merging.

And the nightmare had just begun to walk.
