Chapter 6

The Price of Power

The door’s slam hung in the air like a gunshot echoing through an empty cathedral. Kieran’s breath hitched—sharp, ragged—stabbing at his lungs. The stale tunnel air pressed heavy, crawling with a sudden, suffocating stillness that gnawed at his nerves. Every shadow around him seemed to flicker, pulse, as if alive and watching.

His fingers curled tight at his sides, nails biting into palms, skin slick with sweat despite the cold. Somewhere deep beneath his ribs, an old ache twisted—half regret, half dread. His heart hammered a frantic rhythm: trust shattered, and with it, the fragile thread tethering him to hope.

Ahead, the dim light of the tunnel's end wavered, throwing jagged shapes against cracked concrete. The silence screamed louder than any warning. Somewhere, a single drip of water fell—slow, deliberate, counting down a coming reckoning.

Kieran’s gaze snapped downward. The System interface shimmered in his vision, veins of electric blue lacing around the edges like a pulse. It flickered—a ghost of light—then vanished.

No confirmation.

No guidance.

Only a cold void.

He swallowed hard, the metallic taste of impending sacrifice flooding his mouth. The System, that insidious heartbeat inside him, had always been a gamble—an ally with teeth. But now, its silence was a threat worse than any enemy at the gates.

"Come on," Kieran whispered, voice cracked, breath trembling on the edge of breaking. "What do you want from me?"

The empty tunnel answered with a low hum, faint like distant thunder, growing beneath his skin.

Then the interface flickered back—sharper, more intense.

A message, flashing in stark white letters against darkness: ‘Power demands your soul’s thread.’

His stomach clenched like iron bands. The words carved deeper than any blade.

A soul’s thread.

He knew. The price. The cost of ascending beyond mortal boundaries.

The twisted whisper of the System had promised strength—unimaginable power to carve a new fate. But at what price? At what sacrifice?

Kieran pressed a trembling hand to his chest as if to stop some invisible claw from rending him apart. The knot in his gut tightened, cold sweat dripped from his brow. Memories flared—ghosts of failures past, faces haunted by his empty promises.

To gain power was to risk losing himself.

The thought was a cold shard sliding down his spine.

He swallowed again, each breath shallow, fragile.

A flicker caught his eye near the tunnel wall.

Movement.

A shadow detached itself from the darkness—a woman stepped into the pale light.

Her eyes were sharp, and in them burned the kind of fury Kieran recognized all too well.

“Thought you’d be dead by now,” she said, voice low, tense, fighting for control.

Naomi.

His oldest friend. The only person left who knew the price he’d already paid. The sacrifices he’d hidden like scars beneath his skin.

Her gaze searched his face, landing on the flicker of the System’s glow behind his eyes.

“Don’t tell me you’re actually thinking about pushing further,” she muttered. “You don’t have the luxury, Kieran.”

A bitter laugh escaped him.

“Do we ever?” His voice cracked. “Every time I turn back, I lose another piece of what’s left.”

She took a step closer, eyes hardening. “Then don’t lose that.”

He looked away, swallowing down the sudden, brutal ache.

He felt it then—a tug, faint but irresistible, like a thread unraveling inside his chest.

The System pulsed again. ‘Sacrifice accepted: Soul thread initiated.’

A shiver ran from his scalp to his toes. His vision clouded, edges blurring, as if the world was twisting around a single, invisible axis.

“Don’t let it control you,” Naomi warned, but Kieran barely heard her.

His hands clenched, knuckles white, sweat slicking fingers trembling against the cold concrete.

He tasted blood, sharp and biting, metallic on his tongue.

The line between power and destruction had blurred.

One last breath.

One last choice.

The tunnel seemed to tighten, walls closing in like a coffin.

His heartbeat thundered beneath his ribs, loud enough to drown out everything but the pulse of the System—relentless, demanding.

Kieran’s mind spiraled.

If I take another step—if I accept this thread—will there even be a me left?

Then, as his fingers hovered over the translucent command to ascend, a distant sound shattered the heavy silence.

A low, rumbling voice echoed from the shadows beyond the tunnel’s mouth.

“This isn’t just your fight, Kieran.”

The voice was cold, clipped—but unmistakable.

Lucien Mardok.

The war was far from over.

And the true price was just beginning.

The System shimmered again, stark, merciless: ‘Power demands your soul’s thread.’

His breath caught.

And somewhere in the growing darkness, the tether snapped.

---

The hollow click of a lock turned somewhere behind him.

The shadows shifted.

And Kieran made his choice.
