Chapter 3
Kieran staggered back, heart hammering against his ribs like a drumbeat warning of an ambush. The shadows in the alley no longer felt empty—they stretched and curled like the inside of a waking beast’s mouth, thick with promise and threat. That name—Lucien—slithered inside his skull, leaving a bitter taste.
His breaths came shallow, lungs clawing for air as the cold night crept beneath his skin. He wiped a shaky hand over his clammy forehead, but the sweat only mixed darker with the grime. The voice was gone, but its shadow lingered, a poisonous residue curling around his thoughts.
Then—
A guttural roar erupted from the end of the street, tearing through the calm like a thunderclap. On instinct, Kieran spun toward the noise, eyes wide beneath the brim of his hood.
A malformed figure was breaking out of a fractured dimensional gate—a ragged tear shimmering with violet lightning. The creature staggered free, its body a grotesque collage of bone and sinew, eyes burning a feral amber.
It sniffed the air like a predator, nostrils flaring as saliva dripped from its jagged maw.
No time to hesitate.
The system’s cold, mechanical hum buzzed in Kieran’s skull like a swarm of electric hornets.
Level 1 Ability Unlocked: Hunter’s Edge.
The digital interface blinked into his vision: a minimalist HUD, glowing softly with data he barely understood yet felt instinctively drawn to.
A crystalline dagger materialized in his palm, its surface shimmering with sharp geometric lines that bit into the air’s heaviness. The touch was alien, almost burning—like holding a shard of frozen flame.
He took a step forward, knees unsteady, every nerve ignited.
"You don’t belong here," he muttered, voice rough as gravel.
The creature growled low, the sound drilling into his chest—raw hunger made manifest.
Kieran lunged.
Steel bit into foul flesh with an acidic hiss. The beast recoiled, slashing back with clawed hands, nails ripping deep into Kieran’s forearm. White-hot pain blossomed, but adrenaline plastered it over with determined numbness.
He dodged a brutal swipe, rolling across damp pavement slick with rain and unknown fluids. His dagger sang, cleaving at tendon and muscle with ruthless precision.
But every strike drained something from him—an unseen tether fraying with each heartbeat.
Vision blurred; static fuzzed the edges of his sight.
The system’s interface pulsed irregularly, as if warning: "Sacrifice required. Stabilize."
Kieran clenched his teeth. The creature lunged again, mouth opening to reveal rows of jagged teeth dripping venom.
The dagger plunged into its throat. The monster collapsed, ragged breaths shaking its bulk.
Silence swallowed the street.
The sensation hit like a tidal wave—his mind convulsed, fragments of cold and fire ripping through his consciousness. Images flashed without request: twisted memories he never lived, voices screaming in languages unknown, the excruciating feel of loss multiplied infinitely.
He staggered, clutching his head, knees buckling beneath him.
"Focus," he hissed, heartbeat pounding so loudly it nearly drowned out the system’s whisper.
But the whisper twisted, darkened into a command.
“Sacrifice... choose.”
The air around him thickened. The system’s message scrolled in his vision, stark and inescapable:
Sacrifice required to ascend.
His fingers trembled on the dagger’s hilt.
"What kind of sacrifice?" he choked out, breath ragged.
No answer but the creeping weight in his chest.
Kieran dropped to his knees, gaze darting to the empty street.
Every muscle screamed; his mind frayed under the unseen force pulling at his very essence. Something inside him was unravelling, and the system’s hunger grew insatiable.
A figure stepped out from the shadows—a street vendor, eyes wide with terror.
“You okay?” the vendor stammered, hand trembling as he reached toward Kieran.
Kieran shook his head slowly.
“Not... not like this.”
The vendor took a cautious step back.
“I—I saw the thing... That was no normal monster.”
Kieran’s skin prickled.
“Yes. And it wasn’t alone.”
A second howl split the night. Distant, yet impossibly close.
The system’s interface flared red.
Sacrifice demanded: Life essence.
Kieran’s breath hitched.
Life essence?
The cruel irony choked him. If this system took life to give power—whose life? And how much?
He gritted his teeth, forcing himself upright.
Could he survive this? Could he risk delivering a piece of himself to gain this forbidden power?
He wanted to scream. To curse the cruel fate that entwined his name with Lucien’s and dragged him into this abyss he barely understood.
Pain streaked through his skull—sharp, unyielding.
Kieran’s eyes flickered open, focusing on the cracked pavement.
The system pulsed louder, almost pleading.
Choose sacrifice.
His vision blurred with conflicting memories. Faces he failed. The family he couldn’t save. The friends he buried beneath his own cowardice.
A twisted thought crawled into him—
What if the sacrifice was more than flesh? More than pain?
What if it meant losing what remained of himself?
The decision burned hotter than the dagger in his hand.
A sudden, shattering crack echoed behind him.
Turning sharply, Kieran saw the dimensional gate rip wider, countless grotesque limbs spilling out like the spawn of nightmare.
Feral eyes locked onto him.
He was bleeding. Broken. But the hunter had to rise.
Hands shaking, he gripped the dagger—
And the system spoke again.
Sacrifice accepted: one heart beat.
Pain flared in his chest, a hollow pulse that felt as if his very life was being siphoned, thread by fragile thread.
His vision swam. The world tilted.
But new strength surged beneath the pain—a promise and a threat tangled together.
The monsters advanced.
Kieran gritted his teeth, dagger raised.
Then—
The system whispered one last chilling promise, cold and absolute.
Next level available.
He wasn’t ready.
But the sacrifice was done.
And the cost was already known.
His lips parted, breath shallow.
"Lucien," he whispered—not as a name, but as a curse.
A slow, deliberate knock echoed at the alley’s entrance—sharp, insistent.
Kieran’s fingers trembling, turned toward the sound.
The world waited.
The sacrifice demanded…
and no one else could endure it.
