Chapter 2

Awakening the Forsaken

The faint pulse thrummed inside Kieran’s chest, a heartbeat not his own. He swallowed dryly, the die already cast by that sinister smile curling on his lips. The room around him blurred into shadows and light, the air inching cooler, tighter—like the breath of something lurking just beyond his skin.

His fingers twitched, each nerve alight with electricity. The Forsaken System’s interface hovered in mid-air, faint glyphs writhing in molten silver—an unwelcome glow only he could see. No other hunter’s HUD concealed such a ghostly layer, no guildmate ever whispered of a power buried so deep beneath the code.

“Test it,” the whisper almost tasted like silk on his tongue—soft, persuasive, brutal.

Kieran clenched his jaw. He wasn’t some fortune-seeker or reckless idol-chaser. The Forsaken wasn’t a game. It was a war he’d chosen to fight silently, in the shadows.

His palm opened, the swirling glyphs pulsing in response.

The first activation was cautious, almost delicate: a flicker of the system’s essence weaving through his veins like liquid fire. His vision sharpened, the faintest breeze made leaves jitter outside the cracked window. Breathing slowed to a measured rhythm, but his skin prickled with cold.

“Level 1 acquired.”

The prompt glimmered like a secret prophecy.

He exhaled in a long, steadying hiss, fighting against the tightening coil in his stomach. The price wasn’t clear yet. The Forsaken System never revealed its toll upfront.

Kieran tapped again. Power surged—small but undeniable. His strength heightened and senses scrambled to a new frequency; he detected the faintest vibration from cracked concrete, the subtlest thrum beneath broken pipes. A hunter’s edge born from something not quite human.

But something in his mind snapped—a flicker of sharp pain, like shards of glass behind his eyes.

He gritted his teeth, grabbing the edge of the table.

The screen flickered wildly: “Sacrifice required—accept?”

His heart hammered. Was this the cost? Sacrifice.

His fingers hovered, trembling.

No normal system demanded payment before even granting the boon.

“Tell me what you want,” he muttered, voice raw, eyes burning like twin coals.

Silence. Then—

A chilling whisper spiraled inside his head: “Your past debts... unpaid.”

For a breath, the room dimmed further. Cold seeped into his bones, and Kieran’s chest tightened as if invisible hands squeezed, drowning his breath.

Memories stabbed him—flashbacks of faces he couldn’t save, promises broken, a hollow echo of failure. The Forsaken System didn’t just ask for sacrifice—it fed on his own guilt.

Fight or surrender—one choice meant falling further into darkness. The other risked losing the frail chance at ascendancy.

With trembling resolve, he dragged the cursor towards acceptance.

“Confirm Sacrifice.”

His vision blazed white-hot.

Pain shredded his temples, burning into nerve and bone. A scream clawed upward, torn back before escape.

When the white vanished, the room snapped sharply back to focus, colors richer, sharper. The glyphs shimmered, alive and insistent.

System Prompt:

Forsaken Level 2—Awakened.

Simultaneously came a surge—raw, intoxicating—power flooding his muscles, mind racing like electric storms. His senses expanded beyond mortal limits: every rustle of paper, every distant footstep echoed with crystal clarity.

But beneath that exhilaration slithered the grim shadow of cost. His vision jerked two beats ahead, fragments of future moments folding into his mind before they happened. A twisted gift—a curse that fractured his perception of time itself.

Suddenly, a notation blinked on the edge of his HUD, half-hidden, cryptic:

“I watch. I wait. I hunger.”

Kieran’s blood ran cold. This wasn’t merely a system.

This was something alive—something ancient, hungry—and it didn’t just mark his progress.

It was shaping it.

His fingers clenched into fists that burned with newfound might.

A cold voice whispered beneath the noise: “Ascend, or be consumed.”

His breath hitched as the weight of the Forsaken’s will crashed into his reality. This was no ordinary power.

This was a war for his very soul.

A sharp rap broke through the thick silence—three knocks on the battered door.

Kieran barely blinked, but his heart slammed deafeningly against his ribs.

Because from the darkness beyond, a voice echoed, smooth and cruel:

“You’ve awakened it. Now it awakens you.”

His mouth went dry. The echo carried a name that twisted in his gut, a name he wasn’t ready to face:

“Lucien.”
