Descending Sanity

The knock came again—sharp, insistent—reverberating through the hollowed stone chamber like a predator's whisper.

Kieran froze, every nerve flaring. His heart wasn't just pounding; it thrummed, a relentless drum hammered raw beneath his ribs. The air tasted stale, like forgotten tombs, and the shadows pooled thicker, darker in the corners as if watching.

He didn’t move. Couldn’t. His fingers trembled, twitching as if reaching toward something unseen, something clawing. The system’s faint hum tickled at the base of his skull—the same electric pulse he’d tried to suppress since the last surge.

The world tilted. The walls flickered like static—fractures in reality.

"Who’s there?" His voice cracked, brittle as dry twigs.

No answer. Just silence, heavy and suffocating.

Kieran stepped forward finally, each breath shallow and ragged. The knock came a third time, this time from behind the thick iron door embedded in the far wall—the one he’d avoided. The one that never opened.

His gaze fixed on it. The chill crawling up his spine was more than cold—it was a sinking dread curling inside his bones.

He reached out, fingers grazing the rusted surface, and the system flared—an immediate inferno behind his eyes.

Images slammed him sideways.

A child screaming in a burning street, wide-lidded with terror.

A fractured memory of his first failure—blood and regrets blending into a nightmare web.

A faceless, shadow-cloaked figure standing in a ruined cityscape, whispering his name.

The visions shattered and reformed, relentless, unyielding. His breath hitched, and the room pulsed like a heartbeat syncing with the system’s erratic thrum.

He staggered back, clutching his head as a scream rasped in his throat. But was it his? Or the echo of some other voice lodged inside his skull?

"The system’s... pulling at me," he gasped, voice raw. "Trying to—"

A flash shattered the dim—a line of blood painted across his palm, carved by his own nails.

"No," Kieran whispered. "Not again."

He sank onto the cold stone floor, sweat slicking his forehead despite the chill. The knock had ceased. Silence reclaimed the chamber, but it felt suffocating, as if the walls themselves held their breath.

Fingertips trembling, he opened the system menu—blurring, glitching like a fractured mirror.

Level: Unknown.

Experience: locked.

Sacrifice: pending.

A pulsing red indicator blinked at the edge of his vision—a blinking beacon that sent his chest tightening.

Why was the system hiding its progress?

A chilling suspicion unfurled inside him. Was this his mind’s fracture, or was the system twisting reality, tightening its chains around him?

He wiped the sweat from his brow, and for a moment, the room seemed to tilt again—only this time, the shadows shifted. Not just darkness, but shapes—faces. Familiar faces.

"Lucien…"

The name slithered from his lips like poison.

The faceless figure returned, eyes gleaming with cold fire, just beyond the veil of reality. He raised a hand—an invitation or a threat.

Kieran’s muscles tensed, warning lights flashing deep inside his bones.

“Forget control, Kieran,” the vision whispered, voice like ice cracking over thin glass. “You never had it.”

His heartbeat thundered louder, drowning out the whisper. A sudden cold grip tightened around his chest, lungs burning with desperate need for air as the room spun faster—

And then, silence.

A faint, unsteady breath.

The iron door creaked open.

A sliver of dim light spilled inside, slicing through shadows like a blade.

Kieran’s head snapped up. His eyes met the threshold—an empty corridor stretching behind the figure standing there.

But there was no figure.

Just the hollow echo of the knock lingering in the dark.

Was it real? Or had the system gnawed at the edges of his sanity so fiercely that nothing would ever be real again?

He swallowed hard, fingers brushing the bleeding scratch on his palm as the question burned hotter than any wound:

Was this the horrifying bleed of hallucination—or the system’s final, insidious manipulation to own him?

The cold air thickened. The door groaned wider, inviting him in—or into madness.

Kieran rose, every nerve screaming to flee, but something in the pit of his gut—a terrible, fierce resolve—pulled him forward.

Step by trembling step.

The unknown lurked beyond.

And he was running out of time.

The door slammed shut behind him.
