Chapter 15

A Dangerous Bargain

Kieran’s lungs heaved, the metallic taste of old blood lingering as the system’s glow sank beneath his skin like embers dying in ash. The dim light of his cramped apartment flickered, stretched thin by the grinding weight of the choice he'd just made.

He sank to his knees, fingers clawing at the cracked floorboards, tracing cracks that spun into dark veins. The apartment smelled faintly of rust and neglect—his world closing in, a cage tightening with every breath.

Behind the walls, a roiling silence pressed heavy, aching with the promise of something worse. Every instinct screamed that this was a precipice. Yet, a faint pulse thrummed from the system core embedded beneath his sternum—a fragile flame against creeping darkness.

The air shifted suddenly, colder now, as if the room itself inhaled. Kieran’s gaze darted toward the flickering screen of his holo-pad. A message blinked alive—a symbol, sharp and unfamiliar, like a thorn hidden beneath silk. The sigil of the secret faction.

His fingers trembled, hesitating, as memories crashed: whispered warnings in shadowed alleyways, veiled offers made with steely eyes, promises carved from fear and desperation. This was their world—hidden beneath layers of lies and blood. And now... he was theirs to summon.

The holograph buzzed again. One word shimmering in a cruel font: Meet.

Kieran closed his eyes, mind racing through the cost yet to come. Every level gained from that forbidden system demanded a price. Sometimes more than he was willing to pay. Sometimes... everything.

The city outside groaned under the weight of neon storms—an endless haze of looming towers and shattered dreams. Somewhere beneath the flickering lights, Lucien Mardok's shadow stretched long and cold. They were moving, calculating, closing in like a predator savoring the kill.

Kieran swallowed hard, rising on shaking legs. The last light of dusk bled through cracked blinds, casting long shards across the room like fractured glass.

One step led to another, and soon he was standing in the night, the cold biting through his threadbare jacket. The narrow streets twisted like veins beneath the sprawling city, and every sound echoed with twisted uncertainty.

At the rendezvous, a figure awaited, cloaked in shadows deeper than the night itself. No words were wasted—only a nod and a gesture. They moved toward a concealed entrance: a forgotten hatch in the forgotten undercity, gates carved with cryptic runes humming so faintly that only those attuned could hear.

Inside, the air was thick with the scent of old stone and wet iron, and the walls pulsed with faint blue light—alchemy and technology entwined in dangerous harmony.

“Kieran Voss,” the voice was low, silk over steel. “You seek a knowledge forbidden even to most hunters.”

He met the eyes beneath the hood—sharp, calculating, and somehow weary. “If it means stopping Mardok.”

There was a pause—the weight of history between them—as if the very foundations of the world rested on the edge of that fragile exchange.

The figure reached into the darkness, withdrawing a small crystalline shard that glowed with an eerie, pulsating light. “This holds a weakness inside the system he exploits. One flaw buried deep where even he dares not reach.”

Kieran’s heart thundered. “What’s the catch?” The system’s price was always cruel. Always absolute.

The figure’s smile was thin, dangerous. “You must trade your most precious treasure. Something irreplaceable.”

A breath, a moment hanging tangled in the silence like a blade poised to strike.

“My memories.” Kieran’s voice cracked—a confession torn from the depths of his soul. “The only thing that keeps me whole.”

The shard pulsed like a heartbeat in response. “Then prepare to lose yourself, Kieran Voss. Knowledge is never free. It devours.”

He hesitated, the icy knot in his gut tightening beyond restraint. But beneath it all, a spark blazed—a defiant roar against despair.

He nodded.

The figure handed him the shard. Its edges bit cold, and as Kieran took it, the world fractured—light collapsing inward, shadows spilling out like spilled ink.

Inside his mind, a whisper began to grow—sharp, lethal, and alive. A secret vulnerability poised just beneath the surface of control.

And as the price began to claim him, Kieran understood: to ascend was to lose, and to lose was to become something else entirely.

A new darkness settled in his chest, creeping with whispered promises that clawed at his sanity.

The forbidden knowledge was his.

But at a cost greater than even the abyss could measure.

Outside, the city pulsed on, oblivious to the war fought in the silent depths of a forsaken system.

A single knock echoed on the stone wall behind him—soft, deliberate, and full of unsaid threats.

Kieran's breath caught. The bargain had only just begun.
