Chapter 14

The Rising Threat

Lucien’s smile died in the briefest flicker—a crack in the flawless façade. The knock came again, insistent, echoing through the hollow cathedral of their secret chamber.

Kieran’s eyes darted to the heavy steel door, heart hammering against ribs, a storm raging beneath skin and bone. That single sound was a hammer striking the fragile glass between them and chaos.

Lucien motioned swiftly, voice edged with a razor-sharp cold. “Stay. Watch.”

The air thickened, swirling with an unspoken menace. Kieran clenched fists, nails digging crescents into palms. The room seemed to contract, shadows bleeding inwards like ink spilled on parchment.

Footsteps—steel brushing concrete—followed the knock. Slow. Purposeful. The scent of ozone and burnt wire pricked Kieran’s nostrils, an electric warning he wished he could ignore.

Lucien turned, posture taut—predator's grace. “They’re coming,” he said, voice low, venom lacing every syllable.

Kieran swallowed, the last vestige of calm fracturing. “It’s worse than before, isn’t it?”

Lucien’s eyes darkened, twin coals burning through the dim. “The gate opened wider. The breaches multiply across every sector. Our defenses crumble.”

Outside, the city’s heartbeat faltered. Sirens screamed like tortured beasts, an urgent cacophony clawing through cold steel towers. Fires bloomed like malevolent flowers, their smoky tendrils suffocating the neon glow.

Kieran stepped forward, breath shallow, senses screaming for action. “The hunters—are they holding?”

Lucien’s lips thinned. “Some. But the newer forms... hybrid creatures. Part machine, part nightmare. They adapt faster than any hunter’s blade.”

A distant, guttural roar rolled over the city—grating, primal. It clawed through Kieran’s ribs, stirring a nauseating thrill.

“Show me,” Kieran demanded.

Lucien nodded, fingertips resting lightly on a crystalline panel. Lights danced, a maddening mosaic of blinking alerts and live feeds.

The holograms flickered, revealing streets awash with violence. Colossal beasts shattered concrete, their mutated limbs cracking steel like twigs. Weapon fire peppered the darkness—sparks blossomed into deadly blossoms before being swallowed by shadows.

One figure caught Kieran’s eye—a hunter, but unlike any he’d seen. Cloaked in fractured armor, moving with preternatural agility. A silver glow pulsed faintly beneath his gauntlet.

“Who’s that?” Kieran asked, breath catching.

“Raiden,” Lucien said quietly, eyes never leaving the chaos. “His power rivals mine. But he’s a wild card, unpredictable.”

Kieran’s pulse surged. Raiden—a name whispered in fearful reverence among hunters. A ghost in the system. If he was here, it meant the threat was truly spiraling beyond control.

Suddenly, a tremor shook the chamber. The floor shivered beneath their feet, dust cascading from cracked concrete. A distant explosion roared, shaking the steel door as if it might cave inward.

Lucien’s gaze sharpened, steel in his voice. “They’re almost at the city center.”

Kieran swallowed the scalding surge of panic. “Then we have no time.”

“Wait.” Lucien stepped closer. “The system—the new power you unlocked. It might be the key.”

Kieran’s stomach clenched, a dark weight settling deep. The system had gifted him strength. But at what cost? Each level drained something irreplaceable—the edge of his own humanity slipping further into the abyss. And this was only the beginning.

“I don’t know if it’s enough,” Kieran admitted, voice raw with doubt.

Lucien smiled, but it was bleak, sharp-edged. “It never is.”

A sudden crackle shattered the tense quiet—a hacked broadcast seizing the city’s networks. A distorted voice rasped through every device, an unholy chorus dripping with malice.

“Humans. Hunters. Your end is nigh. The Forsaken rise. Your systems will fall.”

Kieran’s breath hitched. The words were an echo of nightmare, a promise of devastation creeping closer with every heartbeat.

He closed his eyes briefly, tasting the acrid bitterness of fear mingled with fierce resolve.

He would fight.

Because surrender meant losing everything.

Because those he failed before—he would protect them now.

But as he opened his eyes, the weight of destiny pressed harder, the future a blurred horizon shattered by monsters waiting just beyond the next gate.

And this time, Kieran’s newfound strength may not be enough.

A sharp clatter of boots heralded the arrival of Lucien’s aides, faces drawn tight with urgency. The door rattled under the force of unseen assault.

Kieran’s grip tightened on the edge of the console, nails biting into wood.

“We ascend the next level,” he whispered, the system’s glow pulsing beneath his skin—a fragile promise or a cursed damnation.

The shadows darkened outside. The rising threat was no longer a rumor; it was here.

And the abyss was waiting.
