Chapter 13
The sky tore open—splintered into jagged teeth that rained shards of burning light. Kieran’s chest heaved, muscles trembling, as the crack between worlds widened above him. The System’s voice—or was it a whisper threading through his veins?—called out again, insistent, savage. Sacrifice. Power. This dark gravity pulling bone-deep.
His fingers curled into fists, nails digging crescent moons into his palms. The air smelt of ozone and scorched earth, the taste metallic and sharp on his tongue. Around him, the city’s ruins groaned as if mourning, shadows bleeding into the widening wound in the sky.
Beneath that maelstrom, another presence stirred. A figure framed by the blood-hued light, slow and deliberate. Lucien Mardok stepped through the fracture with a predator’s grace, his gaze as cold and unyielding as the void itself.
“You hesitate,” Lucien said, voice folding over Kieran like silk laced with knives. “The System demands a toll, but your fear is the price I hunger for.”
Kieran’s jaw clenched. The burning in his chest was not just from rage or desperation—it was something more intricate. A poison threaded with guilt, with promises broken long ago. “Lucien,” he spat. “You think you own this. But the System isn’t a leash for your ambitions.”
Lucien’s smile was slow, a curve dipped in shadow. “Ownership? No, Kieran. I possess something far greater. A key not just to the System, but to those who puppeteer it from behind the veil.”
The words struck him like ice down his spine. Gatekeepers. The shadowy architects whispered of in underground circles, the whispered myths no one dared face. Lucien’s claim wasn't reckless bravado—it bore the weight of revelation.
With a flick of his wrist, the air shimmered. Phantasms of light coalesced into fractured visions—a mosaic of Lucien’s past, jagged and raw.
A slender boy curled in the remnants of a laboratory strewn with ruined tech, eyes searing with a mixture of grief and defiance.
“Before I was the predator you hate,” Lucien’s voice morphed into narration, chilling yet hypnotic, “I was the forsaken. Born into the system’s cold calculus, discarded, experimented on. They sought to craft gods, but only made monsters.”
Kieran’s gaze locked onto the image—a child stripped of innocence, cradling a broken device pulsing with forbidden energy.
“They pried open my mind, tethered me to the Gatekeepers’ will. Made me a marionette—until I tore my strings and claimed my own fate.”
The vision shattered, replaced by the steel glint in Lucien’s eyes. “This is why I seek control. Not for power’s sake, but vengeance. To rewrite the rules forcing us into cages of flesh and code.”
Kieran summoned the hidden fury clawing beneath his skin. “But at what cost? You’re playing with forces that don’t bargain.”
“Someone already wagered with fate,” Lucien countered, stepping closer, his voice now a low promise, “and lost. I’m here to collect the debts.”
Between them, the portal rumbled, warping the night air with promise and peril. Then, with a sudden stillness that roared louder than any explosion, Lucien’s words cut through the charged silence.
“I own the Gatekeepers’ fate—and by extension, yours.”
Kieran’s heart stuttered as the shadows curled tighter around him.
“Your life hangs in my balance,” Lucien said, lips tilting into a ruthless grin. “Choose, Kieran. Submit… or be unmade.”
The sky’s tearing edges pulsed, an endless abyss waiting to consume them both.
And beneath it all, the System whispered: Sacrifice—now.
Kieran’s fingers twitched, the weight of the impossible pressing down.
Then—a sudden knock echoed behind them. Sharp. Deliberate. A sound from nowhere and everywhere.
Lucien’s eyes snapped to the sound, his smile faltering just for a fraction.
And in that breath, the abyss held its silence.
