The Reluctant Proposal

The chandelier’s crystals caught the light and scattered it across the room in fractured rainbows, mocking Lila Monroe as she stood motionless amidst the opulent chaos. Around her, the gala hummed—whispers, clinks of glasses, laughter sharp enough to slice through the thick air. But Lila barely registered any of it.

Her gaze dropped to the jagged crack winding across the polished marble floor—like her life, fracturing beneath her feet.

Her fingers were curled tight at her sides, knuckles bone-white under the shimmer of her silk gown. The dress, a sapphire cascade of fabric, felt strangling tonight. Not because of fashion or pretense. Because it was the last thing money could buy before the flood claimed everything.

A soft voice cut through the din.

"Fractured as ever, Lila."

She turned and found Asher Quinn standing just outside the circle of gold and crystal, his silhouette sharp, a stark contrast against the muted opulence. His gaze was a blade wrapped in silk—cutting, poised, and merciless.

Asher’s power was palpable even without the roar of the skyline behind him; he was a man carved from shadows and steel.

Lila’s breath hitched.

"You’re late," she said, voice brittle.

"I have a reputation," Asher said, stepping closer. The scent of his cologne teased—smoky leather and something harder to place, danger perhaps. "Unlike some people scrambling to save a sinking ship."

Her heart thudded—too loud, too erratic. She clenched her jaw.

"You don't know what you're talking about."

"Enlighten me. Because from where I stand, Monroe Enterprises is bleeding out. Your creditors circle like vultures, and that art show you slaved over? Canceled."

A thin smile twisted her lips, bitter and raw.

"Don't pretend you care."

"As I recall," Asher’s voice dropped, "you could barely stand to look at me a month ago."

Lila’s eyes blazed. "And now?"

He studied her like a chess player eyeing a fragile piece pinned against the board’s edge.

"Now, I’m offering a lifeline."

Her stomach tightened with dread. Every lifeline came with its own chain.

He pulled a sleek envelope from inside his coat—heavy, embossed with the Quinn Industries sigil.

"Read it when you’re ready to stop playing at being the Monroe who can stand alone."

She took the envelope, fingers trembling despite every ounce of willpower.

"What is this?"

"Asher’s eyes glinted, unrepentant. "A contract. Marriage. One year. No merging of assets, no love—it’s strictly business."

Lila’s brain screamed. Her family’s name—tarnished, a stain spreading faster than any scandal.

Medicine bills overdue. Employees waiting for paychecks.

If she refused, all of Monroe’s fragile threads would unravel.

She looked up, searching his face for the catch, the trap.

"There’s a catch."

He smirked, dark and certain.

"Of course. There always is. You’ll have to live with me in my penthouse. Attend the endless corporate events. And keep up appearances. One wrong move and—"

"Your empire falls?"

"No," Asher’s voice dropped to a whisper, thick with menace. "Yours."

A tremor ran through her spine.

The gallery’s glittering chandeliers blurred as her vision tunneled.

One choice.

Save the family legacy or sink beneath the weight of secrets that would drown them both.

She folded the envelope, grinding her teeth.

The question slammed into the silence between them: Will Lila accept the contract marriage… or watch everything she loves burn to ash?
