Unwelcome Memories

The phone’s harsh chime sliced through the charged stillness like a sharpened blade.

Sebastian's jaw clenched so tightly the pulse throbbed explosively at his temple. His fingers hovered over the screen before dragging it open. The glow painted jagged shadows across his sharp features, which were usually so unreadable now betraying a flicker—a warning.

Celeste’s breath hitched, caught between dread and desperate curiosity. Every nerve in her body screamed to run, but she was rooted, an unwilling anchor in the storm.

“What is it?” Her voice was a fragile thread barely holding herself steady. The city’s neon haze blurred through the floor-to-ceiling windows behind them, but all Celeste saw was the inward battle etched in Sebastian’s tight mouth and narrowed eyes.

He didn’t immediately answer.

His thumb swiped swiftly. Then, without looking at her, he said, “A message.” His voice was low, almost a growl, the veiled threat wrapped in every word.

Celeste’s heart hammered like a drum in her chest. Who is it this time? The walls closing around her felt suffocating—like the past was clawing back into her present.

“From who?” she pressed.

Sebastian’s brow furrowed deeper.

“Someone who’s been watching us,” he murmured, and the words dropped like ice cubes down her spine.

The room felt colder suddenly—every breath sharp and unwelcoming.

Celeste swallowed hard, the metallic taste of panic rising in her mouth. Her fingers curled into a fist on her lap, knuckles blanching.

A heavy silence settled. Sebastian finally handed the phone toward her without meeting her eyes.

Celeste’s fingers trembled as she grasped it, screen up. A message blinked from an unknown number:

“I see everything. Every move. Every secret. You’re not as safe as you think.”

No sender ID.

No signature.

Just the chilling certainty that they were being watched.

Her pulse surged, nostrils flaring against the faint scent of expensive cologne that still lingered from Sebastian—a scent that once comforted her but now felt like a shroud.

She looked up, meeting his gaze. His hard eyes burned with silent fury and unspoken fears. The man she was slowly trying to trust had his own walls breaking down in that second.

Suddenly, the weight of the night—the city’s gleam outside, the fragile contract binding them, the whispered threats of enemies unseen—all crashed into her.

Her past memories writhed beneath her skin like live embers: the steward’s cruel laughter echoing behind locked doors, the slam of fists against fragile glass, the sharp sting when promises shattered like brittle bones. Every memory a shard of rage and helplessness that she’d packed away, buried under layers of paint and pretenses.

Celeste’s throat constricted as the floodgates cracked. She clenched her jaw to hold back old ghosts that threatened to drag her under.

Sebastian’s voice broke the fragile silence: “Lucien.”

The name cracked the room wide open.

Celeste’s breath stuttered as her chest twisted painfully.

“Lucien Voss,” Sebastian repeated, voice tight. “He’s been waiting for an opening—and now, he’s stepped into our lives.”

She swallowed the sudden lump choking her words. “Why us? Why here?”

He moved closer, the distance between them shrinking under the weight of truth and danger.

“Because you’re the weakest link,” he said grimly, “and through you, he plans to get to me.”

Those words ignited a blinding fire inside her. Weakness. She would never let herself be that again.

The cityscape outside glittered—deceptively calm—but inside, an unseen war was igniting, ruin and trust caught in the same deadly trap.

Sebastian’s hand brushed hers, steadied but cold, a strange promise in the contact.

“Whatever happens,” he said softly, “we fight. Together.”

Celeste’s eyes burned with unshed tears. She nodded—because the truth was as clear as it was terrifying. She couldn’t protect her family, herself, or even Sebastian without facing the darkness inside and the enemy lurking just beyond their fragile fortress.

Without warning, the lights flickered.

A cold draft whispered through the penthouse.

Her phone buzzed again.

Another message.

This time, just three words pulsed on the screen—a silent command, a shadowed dare:

“I’m closer now.”

The room seemed to shrink, walls closing in as the temperature dropped.

Around them, the city carried on, blissfully unaware.

But for Celeste—and Sebastian—the glittering skyline had just become a cage of secrets, lies, and threats no amount of wealth could shield.
