Whispers from Within

The bullet holes stained the cracked glass like frozen tears, their jagged edges catching the trembling light from the flickering streetlamp. Maya’s chest heaved, each breath shallow and uneven, as if the air itself recoiled from the violence that had just shattered her fragile sanctuary.

Outside, the pounding on the door hadn’t relented—an unyielding assault on the thin barrier she had desperately hoped would hold. That raw voice still tore through the night: “Open up. Now.”

Her fingers curled into fists, nails digging into her palms until the sharp sting grounded her. The room smelled of burnt coffee and old paper, but now it hung heavy with dust and tension. Shadows clung to the corners, lengthening and pulsing like a living thing. The silence beyond the door had turned into a storm.

Maya’s eyes darted across the room, seeking anything—anything—that could buy her a moment, a choice, a fragment of control. Then, almost too subtle to notice, something shifted by the window ledge—a small envelope, cream-colored and unassuming, yet impossible in this place. She hadn’t seen it before. Or… had she?

Her heart jerked painfully. The letter was there, waiting, a whisper from a ghost she had buried deep beneath layers of silence and regret.

With a trembling hand, she knelt beside the cracked frame, eyes never leaving the door as the knocking grew more desperate. Her fingers brushed the envelope’s edges, cool and smooth like a breath against her skin.

The ink on the envelope’s surface was a faded violet, curling elegantly—a script she knew without needing to read. It was from him.

Not from Adrian.

Maya’s throat tightened. The world collapsed slightly, the walls inching closer, suffocating. This letter—this impossible, forbidden message—could change everything.

The door rumbled again, a warning now, unforgiving: “Open it. Now, Maya.”

She bit her lip, forcing herself to breathe, the letter trembling in her hand. The key was freedom—and perhaps death—and both sang the same chilling tune.

Turning the envelope over, she broke the seal.

The paper inside, brittle and scented faintly of lavender and ash, unfolded to reveal tightly penned lines:

*“Maya, If you read this, you are already on the edge. They know about the vow. They are coming—not for you, but for the secret it hides. Trust no one. Not even those you call allies. Your past isn’t dead. It’s the blade waiting to sever us all. Find the truth beneath the ash—before the vow consumes us both. The shadows will speak when you dare to listen. —L.”*

Her fingers tightened until the paper crumpled beneath her grasp. The name echoed through the cavern of her memory—Lena. The woman she believed lost to the unrelenting claws of the city, a ghost swallowed by time and fear.

“Maya,” the voice outside rasped, a sinew of menace threading through each syllable.

She glanced once more at the letter, the faintest tremor of hope and dread intertwining like a vine around her ribcage.

The vow’s cage might be closing tighter—but now, whispers from within promised secrets darker, deeper than she’d ever dared believe.

The knocking ceased—replaced by silence, thick and suffocating. Maya’s gaze sharpened, the weight of the letter burning cold fire against her skin.

A new game had begun. And the first move was hers.

Before she could move, the flicker of a shadow shifted behind the cracked glass—a reflection? A watcher?

Her heart slammed against her ribs as the doorway creaked open.

The darkness stepped inside.
