Chapter 11

Collateral Damage

The screen’s cold glare seared Maya’s vision, a mosaic of names, dates, and blurred photographs bleeding into each other—each a faded echo of a life now shattered. Her heart pounded, a wild drumbeat reverberating against the walls of her skull. She had expected clues. She hadn’t expected this carnage.

A low hum filled the cramped room, the neon outside flickering through streaked glass like spectral fingers. The air tasted metallic, acrid—like broken promises oxidizing into despair.

Her breath hitched.

Two names swam before her eyes—Lena Torres. Sixteen. And Aron Wren. Twenty-two. Both just faces in yesterday’s crowd. Both listed as “Casualties of Vow’s Curse.”

Maya shoved back from the desk, the chair scraping sharply against cracked linoleum. The room felt suddenly smaller, as if the shadows pressed in, whispering threats only she could hear.

“Collateral damage,” she muttered. The words tasted bitter, yet raw truth clawed beneath them.

The cursor blinked at her—a summons to dig deeper. She scrolled.

Victims—innocents—stricken far from her tangled focus on Adrian’s gaze, on the iron fist of this ancient promise.

A photo caught her eye.

Lena Torres: the girl from the market, the one who once smiled at her awkward jokes as they waited in line for synth-coffee. Now a statistic.

Maya’s hands trembled. With a trembling finger, she tapped the image. A video file opened.

Flickering to life, grainy footage spilled across the screen: Lena walking through a crowded street. Laughter around her, summer sun on her hair, the carefree bounce in her step.

Then—

A shadow dropped over the frame.

Chaos erupted. Cries. The world tipped sideways.

Lena tumbled, eyes wide, grasping for air.

The camera jerked violently.

The video ended.

Maya swallowed hard.

Beside her, her phone vibrated urgently—a sharp buzz cutting through the tense silence. She glanced at the screen: an encrypted message from an unknown number.

“Look closer. He’s behind it.”

A bead of sweat traced down her temple, the room’s stale air wrapping tight like a noose.

Her fingers darted back to the document, scanning lines, hunting patterns. Names linked by dates and locations, and always—an unseen hand.

Every tragedy seemed to spiral back to Adrian Voss.

Her pulse quickened.

No accident.

No consequence of the vow alone.

But a deliberate chain of destruction, orchestrated like a symphony of ruin.

Her phone vibrated again. Another message. A photo file.

Hands stiff, she opened it.

A blurred figure stood in a shadowed alley, wrist adorned with a discreet cuff—a symbol only she would recognize. Adrian’s symbol.

Beneath, barely legible, scrawled words: “The curse spreads. Watch the pieces fall.”

Maya pressed her palm to her mouth, fighting the sting of rising fury.

A flicker of movement caught her eye at the window.

She snapped her head up.

Nothing.

Only the city’s distant hum and the restless flicker of neon.

Her mind raced, weaving the threads of betrayal tighter.

If Adrian held the strings to this curse—twisting it to his will—that meant the vow wasn’t the cage she thought...

It was the weapon he wielded.

Her jaw clenched, breath shallow.

The cost of breaking the vow was no longer a personal sacrifice.

It was the lives left shattered in its wake.

And Adrian—smiling from the shadows—was pulling the final threads.

A soft knock rattled the doorframe.

Maya’s stomach twisted.

She didn’t dare look.

“Come in,” she said, voice steady even as the room chilled.

The door creaked open.

A silhouette stepped through.

But the face was not one she expected.

“Your move, Maya,” the figure said, voice low, a smirk teasing the edge of menace.

Behind him, the night swallowed her world whole.
