Chapter 4

Unearthing Betrayals

The knock sliced through the suffocating silence, sharp as glass shattering on marble.

Elena’s breath hitched, her gaze flickering to the half-open door where the faint silhouette lingered. The air in the room tightened—it sucked the warmth from her skin and left a metallic taste in her mouth. Marcus’s dark eyes narrowed, every muscle in his face taut with tension, like a coiled spring ready to snap.

She wanted to move—bolt past him, vanish into the labyrinth of corridors beyond—but something invisible rooted her in place, a poisonous thread pulling her down.

The door creaked wider.

A lean figure stepped inside, their footsteps so measured they barely stirred the thick, stale air. Elena’s pulse battered her throat, a wild drum that obliterated all sense except raw instinct.

“Is this a bad time?” the newcomer’s voice was silky, but beneath it lurked a snake’s hiss.

It was Jorin—the strategist she'd trusted since the scandal had thrown her world into chaos. The man who had vowed loyalty in whispered promises under neon-lit back alleys and across polished boardroom tables alike.

Elena’s eyes searched him, desperate. Did his gaze flicker? A twitch in the jaw? A hint of guilt, panic?

Instead, Jorin smiled, but it was thin and unreadable. “Marcus,” he said smoothly, voice low, “you summoned me.”

The room’s weight grew unbearable; every shadow seemed to lean in, hungry for secrets.

Marcus’s smirk was barely noticeable, but it cut sharper than a razor. “I did. We have matters to discuss.”

Jorin’s eyes slid to Elena, a minute flicker barely caught in the corner of her vision. The kind that screamed warning.

Elena’s throat tightened—not from fear, but something rawer: betrayal lacing her blood like ice.

She forced a smile, though it barely stretched her lips. “I didn’t realize I was part of this meeting.”

Marcus’s gaze landed on her with cold amusement. “You rarely are, Elena,” he said, voice oily. “But tonight… everyone’s cards are on the table.”

The knock had pulled back the curtain on a stage she’d thought she controlled. But now, every step felt like sinking deeper into quicksand.

Jorin moved forward, his hands steady as he pulled a slim envelope from his jacket. The paper whispered secrets as it slid onto the glass table, sliding toward Marcus.

Elena's fingers twitched, itching to snatch it away, to shred every word inside.

Before she could act, an unexpected sound echoed behind the wall: muffled voices, shifting feet.

Elena’s heart slammed as she realized the source—a barely cracked door next to the conference room, the space where she’d stuffed an old hearing device days ago, just in case.

Breath shallow, she tiptoed closer, pressing the tiny receiver to her ear.

Marcus and Jorin’s voices merged in the grainy feedback:

“My sources are tighter than ever,” Jorin whispered. “Elena suspects nothing. If she drifts closer, you give the signal—the blow will be sudden.”

Marcus’s laugh was cold and empty. “Good. Very good.”

The static blurred the last words—the final agreements over deals that would fracture alliances and end lives.

Elena’s heart hammered. The man she'd trusted—her closest confidant—was the worm gnawing at the poisoned core of her fight.

She stepped back, every nerve ablaze.

Her gaze caught Marcus’s smug expression, then flicked to Jorin’s unreadable mask.

The room spun as truths collided with lies she hadn’t yet been ready to face.

A hand closed on the doorframe behind her.

Elena froze. Slowly, she turned—

And found herself caught in the icy gaze of a figure emerging from shadow.

“Looking for something, Elena?” the voice purred.

The scream building inside her throat was swallowed by a smile.

The empire’s shadows had deepened—and now, they were closing in.
