Chapter 3

New Regime

The walls whispered. Elena’s breath scraped her throat raw as the hollow echo of footsteps vanished around the corner. An oppressive silence slipped over the corridor, thick and suffocating—like the calm before the collapse of everything she’d known.

Her fingers trembled, curling into fists at her sides. The shadows clung tighter, as if watching, waiting. The temperature dropped; a shivering chill crept beneath her skin. She could still hear the faint clack of heels retreating, a ruthless metronome marking her unraveling.

Somewhere behind her, the pale glow of warning lights stuttered to life, casting fractured reflections on the glass walls. They fractured her resolve too. The truth was a distant silhouette, elusive as smoke, just beyond reach.

In the suffocating quiet, her phone buzzed sharply against the marble floor. She yanked it out, screen lit with a single message: “Board meeting. 9 AM. Your presence is mandatory.” The signature was cold, official. Marcus Dain.

Her pulse hammered—a brutal rhythm of dread and defiance. Mandatory. The word barked like a command, a trap with fangs she could already taste.

She swallowed hard, shoving the device into her pocket. Turning, the sterile hall swallowed her retreating silhouette. But every step felt heavier—like chains tightening around her ankles with the memory of that voice: “Stop now, or you’ll regret it.”

By dawn, the city's titanic skyline was cloaked in a grim palette of steel and fog. The looming spires of Voss Corporation’s headquarters sliced through the muted light, a monolith of power rising from the ashes of scandal.

Elena approached the building’s polished entrance, its glass mouth yawning open to swallow the dissent and ambition within. Servos hissed open the main doors, cold air rushing like a verdict.

The lobby buzzed with recycled indifference—clacking heels, murmurs sliced by whispered urgencies, the constant drone of power in motion. But beneath the surface, an electric current of tension radiated, crackling in the stiff muscles of suited bodies.

She caught the eyes of a few early risers—some averted sight with practiced nerves, others hungered with unspoken challenge.

“Ms. Voss,” a familiar voice sliced through the air, laced with fake warmth. Harold Jensen, chief of security, approached with a formal nod, his posture stiff as a tombstone.

Before she could respond, a terse command cut him off. “Welcome back,” Marcus Dain's voice dripped like acid from the adjacent boardroom, booming through hidden speakers.

Elena’s heart clenched.

Marcus stood at the head of a long mahogany table that gleamed under harsh, unforgiving lights. His gaze sliced across the room—a predator basking in dominance. The room felt colder with him in it.

“Effective immediately,” Marcus’s voice filled the space, slow and deliberate, “the previous management’s failures have cost us dearly. Voss Corporation will now operate under a new regime. Transparency and discipline are not requests. They are demands.”

His eyes locked onto Elena for a heartbeat too long.

Statements blurred—harsh guidelines on operations, stringent ethics oversight, the dissolution of departments formerly loyal to her family. Every word was a steel blade carving into the foundation she once stood on.

“The corporation will roll out new security protocols,” Marcus declared. “Background checks, surveillance expansion, and most importantly, zero tolerance for insubordination.”

The room shifted, breaths tightening, alliances redefining.

A hand shot up from the far end. “Marcus, what does this mean for the Voss legacy? For shareholders still uncertain?”

Marcus allowed a thin smile, cold and calculated.

“The legacy is preserved by eliminating weak links. We move forward without the baggage of past failures—no exceptions.”

Elena’s jaw clenched, tendons taut beneath her skin. The venom in his words tasted like ash.

The meeting adjourned with brisk efficiency. Staff dispersed, whispers curling behind locked doors.

Elena lingered, eyes drawn back to the empty chair that should have been hers. Power was shifting beneath her fingertips—a battle for control that had already begun.

A sudden ping from her phone drew her away. A message appeared: “Meet me. Office 42B. Now.” No signature.

Her skin prickled. Danger was an old friend.

The elevator dropped her silently into the depths of the tower. Numbers flickered past as the steel cage descended.

She stepped into Office 42B—a shadowed enclave lined with floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the city’s restless heart.

Marcus waited, a statue carved from ruthless intent. His smile was thin, eyes gleaming with icy knowledge.

“Miss Voss.” His voice was silk wrapping steel. “You’re persistent.”

Elena swallowed the sharp knot twisting her gut. “What do you want?”

He motioned to a sleek table. “To talk business—and family.”

Her pulse quickened. “You’ve made your position painfully clear. What’s left to discuss?”

“More than you realize.” He stepped closer, lowering his voice to a near whisper. “I’ve studied your family history, Elena. The secrets buried beneath the Voss name. The ones you thought safe.”

Her breath hitched. Every instinct screamed.

Marcus’s eyes glittered in the dim light. “You’re not just fighting for an empire. You’re fighting ghosts.”

The door creaked behind her—unseen shadows crawling closer.

“You truly believe you can walk unscathed through a storm you barely understand?” His smile sharpened. “Let me enlighten you.”

Elena’s defiant glare locked with his. The weight of his words hung between them like a guillotine’s blade, ready to fall.

A faint knock echoed at the door.

Marcus glanced aside, a predator sensing the final move.

The veil was lifting. And beneath it, the empire’s darkest shadows waited to be unveiled.
