Framed for a Crime

Elena’s breath hitched, the sterile chill of her penthouse office pressing like ice against her skin. The city lights outside bled through the towering glass—bright and indifferent—mirroring the storm crackling within her chest.

Her fingers trembled against the edge of the mahogany desk, knuckles whitening. The whispered confession weighed heavy, tighter than chains—proof buried somewhere, within the labyrinth of secrets she’d barely begun to unravel. And now, her own name was unraveling, torn apart in the crucible of public shame.

The sleek phone on the desk buzzed sharply—an unrelenting pulse. Instinct made Elena snatch it up, eyes narrowing at the screen. The caller ID glowed with the emblem of Drake Corporation’s security division.

“Elena,” came the voice, clipped and clinical, quicksilver with unease. “You need to see this.”

Her heart clenched. “Now.”

A sharp click, then a link appeared, delivered through secure channels—a video file stamped with an impossibly recent timecode. Elena frowned, the cold sinking deeper, crawling beneath her skin like ink spilling through water.

She tapped the link.

The footage flared to life on the sleek monitor mounted beside her owl-eyed cityscape—grainy but unmistakable. The lobby of the Glass Tower, camera angle from a discreet corner near the elevators. Slow footsteps echoed off polished marble.

And there. Her silhouette. Elena Drake’s figure, sharp in a tailored black coat, shoulders rigid. The way she held herself—the measured pace—was hers, impossible to mistake.

But this was wrong. Wrong beyond anything she could grasp.

Her stomach lurched. She could feel it—the creeping fog, the void where memory should have etched itself. It wasn’t her. She didn’t recognize where she was. Or what she’d been doing.

“Security breach,” the voice crackled again, colder now. “The leak happened minutes ago. Surveillance shows your presence minutes before.”

Her pulse roared, fists slamming the desk. “I was... I don’t remember—”

“Reports accuse you of instigating the espionage,” the security officer admitted, voice nearly lost beneath the hiss of static.

Elena’s mind thrashed against panic, confusion twisting knives. Every protest clawed at the sharp edges of doubt. How could they pin this on her? Was this another layer of Victor Kane’s web? A trap meticulously laid?

The glass tower’s lights flickered in the background on the screen—her battlefield and her prison. A smothering weight pressed against her lungs.

“Who would—how?” Her words faltered, raw and ragged.

“Someone’s framing you,” she whispered, but even her own voice felt fragile.

“Board’s convening emergency. Press’s circling. This footage is already leaking.”

The room grew impossibly cold, sharper than the city’s unforgiving skyline. Elena sank onto the leather chair, the fire of fury and fear smoldering beneath numb disbelief.

A knock shattered the silence—quick, deliberate. Her head snapped up.

The door slid open, slicing through the tension. Nathaniel crossed without hesitation, eyes like cold flint, scanning the screen before meeting hers.

“You’re being set up.”

Elena’s gaze locked on his. “Have you seen that footage?”

He nodded grimly. “It’s enough to damn you in court... or the court of public opinion.” He closed the distance. “We need proof you weren’t there. Something concrete, or Kane wins before you even get a chance.”

Her fingers curled into tight fists. “Then we dig. We expose the lie before it buries me.”

Nathaniel’s jaw clenched. “Time’s already running out.”

She swallowed hard, shivering despite herself. Outside, the city’s lights blurred through the glass—cold stars in a merciless sky.

The face on the screen stared back at her. Elena Drake. But was she even the same woman anymore?

The phone buzzed again. Another encrypted message—no sender name. Elena’s thumb hovered over the screen.

The words blinked on the monitor: “We’re watching. Don’t run.”

Her breath caught in her throat as the video suddenly shifted—

A shadow stepped forward near the elevator bank. The figure’s face was cropped from view, but the camera trembled as a sharp metallic glint caught the light.

A blade.

And then—

The screen cut to black.

Elena’s heart thundered like a warning bell.

The glass beneath her fingers threatened to shatter.

Nathaniel’s voice was a taut thread.

“This isn’t just about framing you. They want you gone.”

Elena’s gaze locked on the broken image.

Her world fractured—and for the first time, the edges were bleeding shadows.
