Chapter 3
Elena’s breath hitched, the weight of the photograph slipping from her fingers like a leaden shard hitting the marble floor. The dim light of her penthouse suite flickered above, casting fractured shadows across her clenched jaw and sharp cheekbones.
A knot twisted in her gut—part dread, part calculation. The echoes of that fractured silence clung to the tight space, suffocating and restless. Outside, the city pulsed with distant traffic, but inside, the air stilled—waiting, like the calm before a storm broke through the glass. She swallowed hard, eyes darting around the sleek room where every inch screamed control. Control she was rapidly losing.
Her phone buzzed softly on the glass coffee table. She resisted the urge to snatch it up, fingers trembling as they hovered inches above the surface. It was a message from Marcus Hale—her trusted advisor, the man who had once been the backbone of everything left to her.
Meet me in the conference room. Now.
Just those words. No pleasantries. No mystery. But in Velanna Drake’s world, “now” was a summons drenched in urgency.
Elena’s instincts screamed red. She pushed to her feet, heels clicking sharply against the polished stone floor. The elegant silence she cherished slipped through her fingers, replaced by the frantic rhythm of her own heartbeat.
The corridors of Drake Corporation’s Glass Tower stretched vast and sterile, stretching like icy veins in the night. Her heels echoed against the hard floors as she moved swiftly—catching shadows, swallowing quiet breaths. The elevator hummed a dull thrum rising through the glass skeleton of the building. Floor by floor, the city’s lights shimmered beneath her—stars trapped behind walls of steel and secrets.
The doors spit her out at the stark conference room. She stepped inside, pulse hammering. Marcus stood by the wall—hands stuffed deep into the pockets of his tailored navy blazer. His usually calm expression was taut. The sharp crease in his brow carved a line of tension she'd never seen before.
“Marcus,” she said, voice low but firm. “You asked for—”
He cut her off, a flicker of unease tightening his mouth. “Elena. It’s not safe here.”
A spark ignited behind her eyes. “Not safe? The whole tower’s a battlefield. What do you mean?”
He glanced toward the heavy glass doors—clear enough to see the labyrinth of offices spilling beyond. “There are eyes everywhere. Listening. Watching. Even here.”
Elena crossed the room in three strides, stopping just inches from him. She searched his face for any sign of the man she once trusted—the ally who’d whispered counsel and worked in shadows for her cause.
But now? His gaze was guarded, fractured by doubt. A storm brewing beneath his veneer.
“Who else knows?” Her voice dropped to a whisper—sharp as ice.
Marcus hesitated, the brief flicker of a furtive glance toward the door—then back. “Not many. But it’s worse than we thought. Victor’s… he’s tightening the noose.”
Elena’s jaw clenched. Victor Kane. The name tasted like bitter ash.
“How is he moving? What’s he planning?”
Marcus’s eyes darkened. “The board meeting next week. He’s maneuvering to consolidate power. But there’s more—something in his reach that could expose you.”
Elena’s fingers flexed into fists. “Then we expose him first.”
Marcus gave her a long, unreadable look. “I want to believe that. I really do.”
The weight behind his words settled like a shadow creeping across her skin.
They stood in silence—tension wrapping the room so tightly it was as if the glass itself might fracture.
Suddenly, the faint trill of a phone broke through.
Marcus’s brow tightened. He pulled his sleek black phone from his pocket.
Elena’s pulse slammed against her ribs as Marcus answered.
Quiet at first. Then his voice dropped—hushed but sharp.
“I told you, this isn’t the time.” He glanced at Elena, eyes wide but unreadable.
A rasp answered him—a voice she recognized immediately, coarse and venomous.
“Victor…”
Marcus’s hand tightened on the phone, knuckles whitening, every muscle in his face rigid.
Elena’s breath stalled completely.
Her trusted advisor—her ally—was on the line with Victor Kane.
The name sliced through the room like a knife.
Marcus’s jaw clenched as the conversation escalated, voices rising in a tense, clipped standoff beneath the sterile light.
Elena’s fingers trembled—not with shock, but with the cold realization of betrayal.
And the glass walls of the conference room suddenly felt thinner than ever—ready to shatter.
Her eyes locked on Marcus. He tried to meet her gaze, but the secret was already spilling between them like poison.
The line cracked with Victor’s voice—sharp and relentless.
“I want loyalty, Marcus. The kind that stays buried when it must.”
Marcus swallowed hard, voice barely a breath between raw nerves and resolve.
“Your loyalty… is your weakness.”
The call ended abruptly.
Marcus’s phone slipped back into his pocket.
The silence that slammed into the room was heavier than any confession.
Elena’s mind raced.
Whispers of betrayal spiraled like smoke twisting through cold steel.
There was no turning back.
Not now.
Not ever.
And somewhere in the distant shadows of the Glass Tower, the game had only just begun.
