Chapter 13
Elena’s breath hitched, sharp and uneven, the aftershock of that suffocating stillness pooling deep in her chest. Her fingers flexed, nails biting into palms slick with cold sweat. The world outside the towering glass panes seemed distant—its heartbeat, slow and detached from the violent tempest within her.
Her vision wavered, then sharpened.
The faint hum of the Glass Tower’s late-night engines vibrated through the marble floor beneath her. Fluorescent lights flickered faintly, casting fractured shadows across the sterile white walls of the executive corridor. Somewhere down the hall, a single office light buzzed—alone and defiant in the darkness.
Elena stiffened, muscles coiled in silent warning.
Someone was still awake.
Her heel clicks echoed softly as she brushed past cold metal scanner panels, every sense prickling with raw tension. The last moments had scraped away layers of numbness; now, the fire blazed anew inside her, equal parts fury and focus.
She didn’t have the luxury of time to crumble.
A sudden shadow detached itself from a side alcove ahead, a figure stepping into the narrow strip of light.
“You shouldn’t be here,” a voice whispered, low with cautious edge but unmistakably deliberate.
Elena froze, pulse thudding harder as the silhouette resolved into a woman no more than twenty-eight—hair pulled into a sleek knot, eyes sharp with a flicker of nervous calculation.
Marissa. Junior Executive. The one name on the corporate roster Elena had memorized but dismissed as part of the vast machinery.
“What are you doing here, Marissa?” Elena asked, voice steady though adrenaline jittered beneath every syllable.
Marissa’s gaze flicked around, the tension in her shoulders easing just slightly. “I could ask you the same thing. You shouldn’t be wandering the floors at this hour—especially not after the board announcement.”
Elena let out a humorless chuckle.
“Right. The announcement. But that doesn’t change a thing. Not for me.”
“Neither for me.” Marissa stepped closer, lowering her voice to a conspiratorial hush. “I know what they did. What they’re still doing.”
Elena’s chest tightened. The tremor in her hands was barely contained.
“Why should I trust you?” she demanded, suspicion sharp as shattered glass.
Marissa’s eyes didn’t flicker. “Because I want the same thing. To see Victor Kane fall—and I’m willing to risk everything for it.”
The words hit Elena like a thunderclap, jagged hope sparking in the bleak shadows.
“How do I know you’re not bait?” Elena’s voice sliced through the quiet.
Marissa met her gaze without flinching, a slow, steady exhale escaping her lips. “You don’t. Not yet. But come with me.”
Before Elena could respond, Marissa pivoted and slipped through a barely perceptible panel embedded in the wall—a hidden door sliding open with a faint pneumatic hiss.
Elena’s heart leapt. This was no accident.
She moved beside Marissa, fingers trailing the cold metal like tracing a secret history as the door disappeared behind them.
Stairwell air was damp, faintly metallic, and chilled to a bone-deep cool that burned beneath her skin. Their footsteps fell in muted rhythm over concrete steps carved sharp against the tower’s polished facade.
“How deep does this go?” Elena’s whisper echoed against the narrow shaft walls.
“Deeper than anyone suspects,” Marissa replied, taking the lead with confidence only a well-guarded insider could hold.
At last, the steps ended in a fortified door—security panel blinking red, an unyielding sentinel beneath layers of bureaucracy and corporate blinders. Marissa produced a keycard from her pocket, swiped with a practiced motion. The lock clicked open, granting them passage into darkness.
Inside, a maze of cables and blinking consoles sprawled like veins beneath fluorescent cold light. The slick sterile lab smelled faintly of chemicals and ozone, and screens glowed with cryptic data that seemed to pulse from some hidden heartbeat beneath the tower’s shimmering surface.
Elena’s breath caught in her throat.
“This isn’t just a lab,” Marissa murmured, eyes darting over schematics that flickered on monitors. “It’s the core. Where they shape everything—the deals, the lies, the power.”
A sudden shiver ran down Elena’s spine.
A deeper conspiracy lay rooted here, buried beneath the glass and steel towers of the city’s heart. A place where truth blurred with deception—where her family’s ruin had taken its first breath.
The metallic scent thickened, and somewhere, hidden beneath wires and coded intelligence, the walls themselves seemed to listen.
Elena glanced at Marissa, fierce determination blazing in her eyes.
“We’re in this together now.”
Suddenly, the soft click of a locking mechanism snapped through the air.
The door slammed shut.
A cold voice whispered from the shadows, sharp and deliberate.
“Exactly where I want you.”
