Chapter 12
Elena’s breath rattled in her chest, sharp shards slicing through the frail calm that had wrapped around her just moments before. The weight of the betrayal clung to her like frostbite—numb and raw all at once. Her hands trembled, fingers brushing the cool surface of the glass table that stretched before her like a battlefield.
The boardroom buzzed with thinly veiled tension. Polished mahogany chairs lined the perimeter, each occupied by a face wearing masks of corporate courtesy. But Elena saw behind those masks—the flicker of calculation in Victor Kane’s eyes, the subtle tightening of jaws around the table, the way the room’s temperature dipped when she stepped back into the spotlight.
Promises were fragility wrapped in smiles here. And today, the board had scheduled a vote. A decision that could either hand her back the keys to the Drake empire or slam the door shut, locking her out for good.
Her presentation was ready. Every detail sharpened like a scalpel—financials, evidence of Kane’s manipulations, the undeniable proof that the empire she was born to lead was starving under his thumb. She had poured weeks into this moment, weaving a narrative tightly enough to choke the lies from the shadows.
“Elena.”
The floor vibrated beneath her as the chair beside hers scraped back. Thomas Halstead, the interim CFO and one of Kane’s most loyal puppets, leaned in with a smile as thin as a razor’s edge.
“I trust you’re prepared to face the consequences of this—” His words sliced through the silence before she cut him off.
“I am here to restore what’s been stolen,” she said, voice steady but low, dipped in steel.
His smile didn’t falter. “Brave words for someone who’s already lost.”
She swallowed the spiral of frustration twisting her throat and turned toward the screen looming overhead—the centerpiece of her dossier. Lights dimmed, shadows crawling along the sleek glass walls, casting long, cold slants of darkness that seemed almost eager to swallow her whole.
The hum of the projector filled the space—a thin, intrusive whine beneath the louder, heavier thudding of her pulse.
Elena forced her gaze forward as the first slides flickered, each data point a bullet aimed at the truth.
She could feel her father’s absence like a ghost on her shoulder—the Forbes summit he never missed, the way his voice used to carry authority like a weapon. She had to be that voice now, a beacon cutting through the murky haze of deception.
Then the screen went black.
A strangled gasp echoed around the room.
Elena blinked, heart thrashing against her ribs.
“Technical difficulties?” Kane’s voice floated from across the table, casual, but laced with venom.
“No, no,” murmured the tech operator seated in the corner, fingers frantically dancing over the console. “It’s not responding.”
Minutes crawled in that suffocating haze. Elena’s eyes darted to the digital clock flashing indifferent numbers overhead. Every second carved a deeper pit of failure inside her chest.
“Let’s try again.” She forced a smile, gave the operator a terse nod.
The screen remained stubbornly blank.
“Looks like someone’s taken a shine to sabotaging your little show,” Halstead murmured, voice dripping with cruel amusement.
Elena felt the room constrict—every pair of eyes narrowing into weapons, every breath held hostage by the silence pressing between them. Murmurs stirred like a gathering storm.
Kane rose, towering in his tailored suit. “This proceeding cannot be derailed by childish theatrics,” he said, his tone sharp enough to cleave glass. “Ms. Drake, perhaps this is a sign to reconsider your position.”
Her jaw clenched. The sting of humiliation throbbed beneath the surface, but fury blazed hotter.
She lifted her chin. “The truth will find a way, Victor.”
A cold chuckle rippled from his side of the room.
“Unfortunately, sometimes truths don’t survive the cutthroat tides of our world,” Kane said smoothly. “Sometimes, they drown quietly beneath the surface.”
Before Elena could reply, the door swung open with a sharp crash. All heads snapped toward the intrusion.
A courier—nervous, sweating under the flicker of fluorescent light—stepped in, holding a sleek tablet aloft.
“For Ms. Drake,” he said, voice trembling.
Elena’s heart jolted. She reached for the device, fingers brushing the cool metal, praying the fates weren’t yet done with her.
She tapped the screen. The presentation flickered to life—this time flawless, vivid graphs and charts marching across the display like soldiers in formation. Vital evidence illuminating the path she’d fought so hard to clear.
But the moment was shattered by a sudden, jarring burst of static. Images glitched, then fragmented. The screen exploded into a cascade of indecipherable blobs. Her meticulously crafted presentation crumbled before the board's eyes, dying in pixelated ruin.
A slow smile crept across Kane’s lips as he stepped forward, eyes glinting with merciless triumph.
“Seems the lines you drew, Elena…” His voice dropped to a whisper that echoed in the fragile hush.
“...were drawn in glass.”
The weight of the room’s judgment pressed down, suffocating and absolute. Elena’s heart hammered against the cage of her ribs, every breath a battle cry in the silence that followed.
Her empire was slipping through her fingers like shards of broken glass.
And the game was far from over.
