Captive Negotiations

The darkness swallowed her the moment the heavy door thudded shut. But it wasn’t the absence of light that settled around Evelyn Marwood—it was the oppressive weight of her own breathing, loud and uneven in the cold, unyielding silence of the chamber.

She leaned back against the polished wall, her fingers curling into fists. The varnished wood was smooth, almost mocking in its indifferent sheen. A small, bitter laugh escaped her—bitter because it tasted like defeat, and a flicker of fury simmered beneath.

“Cassian,” she finally whispered, voice hushed, but each syllable carved from ice. “You think locking me in a gilded cage silences me.”

The faintest scrape of leather against stone echoed from the dim hallway. Footsteps—methodical, deliberate—approached. Her pulse tiptoed upwards, trying to find a rhythm that didn’t scream vulnerability.

The door creaked open, and his figure slipped through the shadows like a predator scenting weakness. Cassian’s mouth quirked into a smile that didn’t reach the cold glint in his eyes.

“You're right about one thing,” he murmured, voice low, velvet laced with menace. “You won’t be silent. Not while you have leverage. But leverage doesn’t guarantee freedom.”

He stepped closer, the scent of expensive cologne masking something sharper underneath—the metallic tang of danger, or perhaps a warning.

Evelyn squared her shoulders. “Name your terms.” Her voice cracked, but only slightly. She forced the vulnerability back underground where it belonged.

Cassian’s eyes flicked downward, catching something tucked beneath her sleeve. A faint smirk broke through. “Always the cards close to the chest, weren’t you?”

Her breath hitched. The hidden dagger—the one she never showed, the one she’d fought tooth and nail to keep secret—now seemed like a fragile shield in the storm.

His gaze sharpened, almost reverent, as if he was weighing a relic and finding it unexpectedly precious. “I know what that is.”

The words hovered, unnatural in their weightlessness. Not a threat—more like a confession.

Evelyn’s heart seized. The room tightened around her ribs, cold shadows slithering into her thoughts. “You don’t.”

Cassian laughed soft, a sound that scraped against her nerves. “I do. Part of it, anyway.”

Her fingers instinctively closed tighter around the hilt hidden under her sleeve, the metal cool and unforgiving.

“You underestimate me, Cassian,” she whispered, voice sharpening into steel. “This isn’t some petty family spat. This—this changes everything.”

He stepped even closer, so close that the faint stench of stale whiskey clung to him, the ghost of late nights and darker deals. His eyes were unblinking, unyielding.

“I never underestimate anyone—least of all you.” His finger trailed down to the edge of the blade’s hidden sheath. “But knowing part of your secret... it terrifies me.”

A beat, heavy and suffocating.

“And that...” His voice dropped to a razor’s edge, “is exactly why I’m willing to talk.”

Evelyn’s breath caught just as the steel edge of revelation sliced clean through the silence.

Outside the fortress walls, the city roared—indifferent, unrelenting—while inside, the blood between them throbbed, raw and exposed.

The game was far from over. But for the first time, the rules shifted beneath their feet.

And somewhere between fragile hope and shattered trust, the first move was about to be made.

A sharp knock shattered the tense air—urgent, unexpected—pausing their dangerous dance.

Cassian’s gaze darted to the door. “It seems our audience awaits.”

Evelyn’s fingers tingled around the hidden blade, heart hammering a chaotic rhythm.

The shadows crept closer. The night was far from done with them.

And the thorns of their bloodline dug ever deeper.
