Chapter 8
Evelyn’s fingers trembled around the delicate crystal, the rim cold against her flushed skin. Her breath escaped in shallow bursts as the echo of Lenora’s words settled into the marrow of her bones—surrender was no longer an option. The ballroom’s ornate chandeliers blurred into halos of venomous light, each glint a dagger thrust into her resolve.
“Lenora,” Evelyn’s voice faltered, brittle yet sharp. “Why? After everything.”
Lenora’s lips curved—a smile not of warmth, but calculated severity. “Because survival requires sacrifices, not sentiment.”
The taste of betrayal was bitter and metallic, like blood pooling at the back of her throat. A soft murmur of music teased from the grand orchestra, a haunting waltz that swirled through the cavernous marble hall. But beneath those notes, a silent storm raged—Evelyn’s heart thrummed a warning, fraying with every beat.
She pivoted on her heel, the silk of her gown whispering secrets as she melted back into the crowd, the flush of heat in her cheeks battling the cold dread crawling along her spine. Her eyes searched—for what, she wasn’t sure. Answers? Clarity? The faintest scrap of loyalty she once believed in. None came. Only shifting shadows and whispered glances.
The Marwood estate wasn’t just a fortress; it was a predator circling its prey; tonight, Evelyn was bleeding out in its jaws.
Lenora’s footsteps followed—soft, deliberate. “You always thought you could outmaneuver Cassian. But you underestimated me.”
Evelyn’s pulse slammed against her temples. “You’re with him. You’re Cassian’s pawn.”
“Not pawn,” Lenora corrected smoothly. “Queenmaker.”
The accusation twisted sharp. Evelyn’s jaw clenched. “You betrayed me.”
Lenora’s face tilted, amusement sparking like a blade. “I did what I had to. You taught me well—trust no one.”
A strangled laugh escaped Evelyn, dry and hollow. “Perhaps I should have learned from you.”
Lenora stepped closer, voice dropping to a venomous whisper. “There’s still time to bow out, Evelyn. Walk away before the noose tightens.”
But Evelyn’s gaze hardened, steel forging in defiance. “I’d rather die fighting than live as a ghost.”
Lenora’s eyes glittered. “Brave words. Let’s see if you can back them up.”
With a cruel final glance, Lenora vanished into the tide of guests, leaving Evelyn adrift in a sea of whispers and shifting allegiances.
Heart hammering against her ribs, Evelyn forced herself to steady her breath. The dance of deceit had only just begun, and the first dagger had been plunged deep. Now she had to decide—strike back blind or retreat to the shadows and regroup.
Her thoughts were a frantic storm as she slipped away from the ornate ballroom, her heels clicking a harsh staccato against the marble floor. The corridors stretched before her—dim, hushed, endless veins pulsing with the lifeblood of Marwood secrets.
As she navigated the maze-like estate, her senses sharpened—every footfall echoing, every whisper a ghost clinging to the walls. The scent of polished wood and old leather wrapped around her, mingled with the faintest trace of jasmine—the perfume Lenora always wore.
She faltered, the hairs on the back of her neck rising. A shadow shifted in a hallway just beyond the flicker of candelabras.
“Evelyn…” The voice was a low murmur, familiar but coated in hesitation.
She whirled, eyes locking onto the figure stepping from darkness—Malcolm, her closest confidant, his expression unreadable beneath tired eyes.
“Malcolm,” she breathed, a fragile hope blooming. “Are you alright?”
He hesitated, glancing over his shoulder, then back at her, the weight of unspoken truths pressing heavy. “We don’t have long.”
A cold chill settled around her spine. “What do you mean?”
His mouth tightened. “Cassian knows everything. He knows about the meeting—about your plan.”
The room tilted, the ground beneath her threatening to give way. “How?”
Malcolm’s eyes flickered with something Evelyn couldn’t name. “I’m sorry.”
A sharp intake of breath caught in her throat; the air stiffened, a wall of silence crashing between them.
“You betrayed me,” Evelyn whispered, disbelief and fury colliding like thunder.
He bowed his head, the weight of his guilt suffocating. “I had no choice.”
Before she could respond, the floor vibrated—a faint, ominous murmur growing into a storm of footsteps behind her.
“Evelyn Marwood—stand down.”
The voice sliced through the silence, cold and unyielding.
Malcolm’s shoulders sagged. “They’re coming.”
Her panic flared—no time to deliberate, no chance to plead. She spun, the corridor before her narrowing into shadows and closed doors.
Footsteps multiplied, urgent and relentless, closing in. Evelyn’s breath caught in a throat drowning in fear and fury as she realized the trap had sprung.
She was cornered, alone—surrounded by unknown assailants cloaked in darkness and hostility.
The world tilted, the last thread of trust severed.
And in that suffocating moment, Evelyn knew one truth above all:
There was no escape from the Marwood bloodline’s thorns—not tonight.
The door slammed shut behind her.
