Chapter 7

Behind the Mask

Evelyn’s heartbeat thundered beneath the silk of her evening gown, each pulse echoing like a drumbeat in the cavernous Marwood estate. The flash drive nestled against her palm, a slender promise of revelation that could shatter the dynasty—or bury her beneath its ruins.

Around her, the ballroom shimmered with crystal chandeliers dripping light like molten glass onto polished marble. Laughter clinked like brittle ice. Faces masked in charm and entitlement floated past, their smiles a veneer for the daggers waiting to be unsheathed in whispered halls.

Lenora’s calm, ruthless smile still haunted Evelyn’s vision. It had been a blade cloaked in civility, a warning sealed in velvet menace. But Evelyn—disgraced heiress, fallen star—wouldn’t vanish into the shadows this time. Not while the Marwoods bled their poison into the city’s veins.

Steeling herself, she adjusted the delicate, raven-black mask perched over her high cheekbones. It concealed more than her identity; it was her armor, her invitation, and her lie.

A slender woman in a shimmering emerald dress drifted past, laughter bubbling like champagne. Evelyn caught the subtle curl of a familiar smirk—Cassian’s favored lieutenant, Silas Grange, weaving through the throng like a wolf in silk gloves.

She melted into the crowd, her breath shallow, every nerve alight. Tonight, she wasn’t the fall of a dynasty—she was its phantom.

The chatter around her blurred into an indistinct hum until a low voice caught her ear.

“...If Evelyn surfaces in this circle, everything’s lost. The founders’ will—”

Another cut her off, cold and clipped. “Then she must not surface. Under any circumstances.”

Evelyn’s gaze snapped toward the speakers, ducking behind a towering gold gilt pillar. Cassian’s silhouette leaned close into someone whose voice was too soft, but the threat radiated sharp as a frozen blade.

She pressed closer, every cramped inch carved from instinct.

“Her recklessness would undo us all,” Cassian was saying, voice heavy with conviction. “Disappearances have consequences. I want assurance—she won't even breathe if she’s a threat.”

The second voice hissed, “Like before?”

The words wrapped around Evelyn like ice. Before. Before what?

A sudden clatter punctuated the tension—a servant knocking over a crystal decanter nearby. Heads turned, laughter momentarily louder, breaking the fragile moment.

Evelyn exhaled slowly, her chest tight with urgency and dread. The threat was no longer veiled. Cassian was orchestrating a hunt—not just to destroy her legacy, but to erase her existence.

She clenched the flash drive tighter, nails biting into the smooth metal.

Somewhere beyond the ballroom’s gilded cage, the city’s night thickened into a suffocating dark, a world poised on the knife’s edge between ruin and revenge.

Evelyn’s next moves wouldn’t just be hidden steps in the dance of masks—they would be a war waged in shadows, where trust was poison and betrayal spun like a crown of thorns.

And the clock was slipping fast.

A velvet-gloved hand brushed her arm. “Ready for the toast, my lady?” The voice was silk, yet underlaid with steel.

Evelyn blinked, turning to meet the smiling mask of Lenora.

The chill in Lenora’s eyes promised that surrender was no longer an option.

Behind their masks, the war had already begun.
