Allies in the Dark

The note trembled slightly in Cassian’s grip, the edges crisp but betraying the faintest trace of moisture—like a whispered promise, freshly delivered. The leather grip of the doorframe pressed cold into his palm as his breath came in shallow bursts. The weight of the words pressed down, heavier than the opulence surrounding him: "You are not as invincible as you believe."

A shiver crawled up his spine, not from fear—no, never fear—but from that razor-thin slice of vulnerability Cassian had never allowed himself to feel before.

Outside, rain began kissing the cobblestones, the distant rumble of thunder mimicking the storm swirling tight inside him.

From the hallway, footsteps thudded—soft, deliberate. Cassian’s gaze snapped upward just as the door creaked open another fraction.

A slender figure slipped inside, cloaked in shadow but unmistakably familiar. Evelyn.

Her eyes, sharp as shattered glass, flicked to the note in his hand.

“You got it too,” she whispered, voice like ice sliding across bare skin.

Cassian’s jaw flexed, a fierce storm of emotions—rage, suspicion, something almost like respect—flashing behind his steel-grey eyes.

“The war starts now, Evelyn. No more shadows.”

She stepped fully into the room, the faint scent of jasmine and gunpowder trailing behind her. Their gazes locked, neither flinching.

A tense silence stretched like a taut wire, stretched to the breaking point.

Then, before words could unravel, footsteps echoed beyond the door.

Cassian’s hand dropped the note. His instincts screamed—danger threaded through every beat of that sound.

Evelyn’s eyes darted toward the entrance, dark corners of the room swallowing the growing tension between them.

“We don’t have much time. There’s someone you need to meet. An ally.”

Cassian’s lips curled, a bitter twist. “Allies? After everything? Even your allies have teeth.”

She pulled a slender USB drive from her coat’s inner pocket, flipping it between her fingers with practiced ease.

“This one bites. Prepare to be bitten back.”

Before he could respond, a sudden knock shattered the fragile moment—a hard, urgent rap.

Both their gazes snapped to the door.

Cassian’s fingers itched to draw, but Evelyn raised a hand, silencing him.

The door swung open. A man slipped inside—mid-thirties, eyes sharp as razors beneath a mop of unruly black hair, a leather jacket thrown casually over a tailored suit.

“You wanted to see me?” His voice held a quiet authority.

Evelyn’s eyes darkened. “Aaron. I’m counting on you.”

Cassian studied the new arrival with a predator’s focus. This was no ordinary guest—in his posture, the calculated ease, the subtle tension beneath civility—something unspoken hung between them all, thick as blood.

Aaron’s gaze flicked to Cassian, unflinching.

“We don’t have time for pleasantries.” He nodded toward Evelyn. “You’re playing with fire, Marwood. And the flames are licking closer.”

“What do you want?” Cassian’s voice was low, controlled but edged with something sharper.

Aaron’s lips twitched, the faintest smirk curving the corners. “To survive—and maybe finally burn this rotten empire down. Together.”

Evelyn stepped forward, too fast for Cassian to interrupt. Her eyes locked with Aaron’s, an unspoken pact crystallizing between them.

The room seemed to shrink, darkness pressing from all sides.

“This drive,” Aaron said, holding up the USB, “contains everything. Proof of the board’s dirty dealings, Cassian’s personal emails, offshore accounts—blackmail material that could crumble your empire.”

Cassian’s heart slammed against his ribs—scandal upon scandal—but beneath it, a rising thrill. The game had changed. The battlefield was no longer just power and blood—it was secrets, whispered threats, and impossible bets.

Evelyn’s voice cut through the tension. “We’re not just playing defense anymore. We’re going on the attack.”

Aaron glanced at the door, a shadow flickering behind his eyes.

“But betrayals hang thick. Watch your back.”

Suddenly, a sharp sound cracked—the unmistakable click of a safety being disengaged.

All three turned sharply toward the window as a sliver of gunmetal gleamed in the dim light outside.

Aaron’s hand shot out, grabbing Evelyn’s arm. “Time to move.”

Evelyn’s breath hitched but she went with him, crouching low. Cassian’s instincts flared—fight, flight, survive.

But before he could act, Aaron squeezed Evelyn’s arm one last time.

“This isn’t over. And trust no one.”

They slipped through the back exit—a calculated escape swallowed by the night.

Cassian was left standing alone, the heavy silence pressing in.

The threat still hung in the air, dense and unyielding.

And just as suddenly as he had come, Aaron was gone.

But the warning lingered, sharper than any blade.

Trust no one.

And beneath that, the whispered echo of betrayal.

Cassian’s gaze hardened. The game was far darker than either of them had imagined.

And already, the shadows were closing in.
