Chapter 11

Lines Drawn

The rain spat sharp against the cracked glass of Evelyn’s office window. Each drop clattered like a secret trying to escape. A low hum of the city’s restless pulse wrapped the Marwood estate—a beast breathing beneath layers of stone and shadow.

Evelyn sat rigid in the leather chair, her fingers clenching the brittle edges of the blackmailer’s envelope still pressed against her palm. The words inside burned like acid: Meet me. Midnight. The Ashes.

Her breath caught—raw and ragged—right as the storm outside thrummed in sync with the turmoil clawing through her veins.

She was an empire’s fallen daughter, chewed by betrayal and cast into exile, yet somewhere within the embers of her ruined pride, a faint ember flickered.

A hand steadied itself on the edge of the desk.

Cold wood under her palm—her knuckles grew white. Evelyn’s mouth tightened. Grudges were crooked knives, and the offer laid out before her was poisoned steel.

The blackmailer. The shadow that had infiltrated her life, the one laughing behind a screen of riddles, now dangling a thread to pull her back from the abyss.

But could she trust the hand stretched in the dark?

Her mind raced—memories of betrayals, whispered scheming at gilded balls, the suffocating weight of the Marwood legacy crashing around her like thunder on broken glass.

No. Not trust. Necessity.

The clock on the mantle mocked her with its tick-tick-tick—midnight was minutes away.

She rose, the leather of her jacket creaking softly as she pulled it tight. Every muscle coiled, every sense sharpened by the quiet dread that settled deep in her bones.

Outside, the storm opened wide, sheets of rain slashing the estate’s stone walls. In the distance, a lonely wolf howled.

She pulled open the creaky door—her footsteps swallowed by thick velvet drapes and the cold expanse of the hall.

The Ashes.

An abandoned warehouse on the city’s ragged fringe, where rust ate steel and shadows tangled like vipers in the dark. It smelled of rot and forgotten sins.

A figure stood waiting beneath a fractured streetlamp, the silhouette shrouded by a long coat and a wide brim hat that swallowed their face in shadow.

“Evelyn Marwood.” The voice was low, silk hiding steel. “You came.”

She swallowed. “You said you had something to say.”

A cigarette sparked, glowing like a single ember—a red pulse in the cold blackness. The figure took a slow drag.

“I have what you want,” the voice continued, gravel in the whisper, “but not what you expect.”

Evelyn’s eyes narrowed. Her pulse hammered against her ribs. “Explain.”

The figure stepped forward, the swagger of someone unafraid of falling. “Your mother.”

Her heart spasmed, a jagged shard piercing her chest. “What about her?”

A flicker of something—regret? Triumph?—passed beneath the brim’s edge.

“She didn’t vanish by accident.”

Silence crashed between them, the world narrowing until only the copper stink of rain and the ghost of a secret remained.

Evelyn’s voice was barely a breath. “Tell me everything.”

Before the blackmailer could speak, a faint rustle echoed—a whisper of movement—or a warning? Evelyn’s gaze snapped toward the looming darkness around the warehouse, senses flaring.

No longer just a meeting. A trap.

But this time she was no fool to wait in the shadows.

“Speak quick. I’m listening.”

The figure’s smile was a blade in the night. “Then listen closely, Evelyn. Because the lines you think are drawn? They’re bleeding. And this blood... it’s your own.”

A sudden crash broke the fragile tension—a sharp echo of footsteps barreling through the debris behind her.

Evelyn spun, heart exploding in her throat. Someone was coming.

Her hand slid beneath her jacket—cool metal kissed her palm: the compact pistol she’d stashed hours ago.

The blackmailer’s eyes glinted. “They’re closer than you think. Your real enemies aren’t just inside the Marwood walls—”

“Save it.” Her voice was hard, ice cutting through twilight. “Who’s coming?”

A shadow lunged from the darkness—a figure cloaked in cold fury and secrets just as deadly.

Evelyn’s fingers tightened on the cold steel.

The storm outside wasn’t just rain—it was war.

And the lines were drawn.

But whose side were they drawn on?

Her breath hitched as the blackmailer’s words echoed in her mind: Your mother didn’t vanish by accident.

The night shifted—promising revelations drenched in blood and betrayal.

And Evelyn knew, with a certainty that shook her to the marrow: the war had only just begun.

A crushing silence fell—broken only by the click of a gun.

Then darkness.
