Chapter 7
The air in the penthouse seemed heavier somehow, as if the very walls absorbed the weight of what she’d just witnessed. Emma pressed her back against the sleek mahogany door, heart hammering against ribs like a frantic prisoner’s cadence.
Silent tears, raw and unbidden, blurred her vision. She swallowed them down, stunned that the man who commanded glass towers and boardroom empires could also fracture so painfully. But the question clawing at her throat wasn’t Alexander’s frailty—it was trust. How deep did the cracks run in her own carefully guarded circle?
The interruption came not with a voice, but the softest chime of her phone vibrating on the marble countertop. She blinked against the residual shock and forced herself upright, fingers trembling as she fumbled for the device.
A message bloomed across the screen, sender: “Maya.”
The text was brief. One line.
“Need to talk. Urgent. Office. Now.”
Emma’s stomach twisted. Maya—her closest confidant, the one person who had stood unwaveringly at her side since this nightmare began. And now… this cryptic summons felt like a splinter beneath her skin.
She swallowed past the dry lump, grabbed her coat from the chair, and moved toward the elevator, almost slipping in her haste.
Urgent didn’t quite capture the dread settling low in her belly.
The office was a glass, steel, and polished wood sanctuary perched high above the city’s restless pulse. When Maya emerged from the shadows of glass-walled conference rooms, her face was tight, lips pressed like lines of steel.
“Emma,” Maya said, voice low, eyes darting.
“What's wrong?” Emma’s tone cracked. “Why the secrecy?”
Before Maya could answer, a new presence smothered the air—a figure slipping in through the back doors of the office. Emma’s breath caught as the shadow detached itself from the darkened hallway.
And then—
“Hello, Emma.”
Alexander.
His usually impenetrable gaze was sharper than ever, but there was something off—something too calm, like a cat who’d just played with its prey rather than the usual cold command.
Emma reached instinctively for Maya’s arm—only to grasp empty air.
Maya was stepping back, slow and deliberate, a faint smirk teasing her lips.
“What the hell is going on?” Emma whispered, voice trembling.
Alexander’s smile deepened. “I was wondering when you’d discover the leak.”
The phrase hit her like a slap, skin prickling with shock and betrayal.
Maya’s eyes flicked to Emma, then to Alexander. “I’m sorry, Emma. But you don’t understand the bigger picture.”
A lie in every word.
Emma’s mind thundered. The ‘leak.’ The bridge burns between trust and treachery now widely ablaze.
“Why?” The question burned from her throat. “Why betray me? Our family?”
Maya’s shoulders squared. “You’ve been blind, Emma. Alexander’s empire isn’t what you think. And I’m doing what I have to—for us, for the future.”
Emma’s free hand trembled toward the sleek glass desk, fingers closing around the edge with white-knuckled force.
“Us?” she repeated bitterly. “Was that why you fed Alexander’s rivals my plans? That’s called sabotage.”
Alexander stepped forward, his cold eyes capturing Emma’s like a hawk spotlighting prey. “Maya’s loyalty lies where the profit does or, perhaps, where the leverage is strongest.”
Maya’s smirk twisted into something sadder, regretful maybe. “I wanted to protect you, but sometimes protection demands sacrifice.”
Emma watched, disbelieving, as the friend who had comforted her through long nights whispered intimate fears and secrets now stood revealed as the architect of her vulnerability.
Her fingers shook. The walls she’d built around her trust collapsed into dust.
A sudden beep from her phone jerked her attention—an alert from the security system.
“Multiple attempted breaches—third-floor vault,” Alexander said calmly, voice steady as marble.
Emma’s wild gaze spun towards him. “How long have you known?”
“Longer than you think.” He stepped close, voice dropping. “And the enemy isn’t just outside these walls, Emma. It’s inside. Closer than any of us dared to imagine.”
All at once, the sanctuary of the office dissolved into something dangerous, unpredictable.
Emma blinked down at her screen—a folder unlabeled, recently downloaded, timestamped just minutes ago.
She swallowed hard and tapped it open.
The files unfolded: documents, messages, photos—proof of Maya’s communications with those rivals. Names, schedules, details only an insider could know. Every secret she’d whispered in confidence spilled naked before Emma’s eyes.
The world she’d trusted shattered.
Emma’s breath came out ragged, heart hammering louder than ever.
Her voice barely a whisper: “Who can I trust?”
Maya’s eyes narrowed, shadowed by regret and defiance.
Alexander’s gaze flickered with something indecipherable.
And the city below glittered, oblivious—their game just beginning.
A soft knock echoed from the heavy office door, jolting Emma’s blood cold.
Emma froze.
The thin veneer of safety was gone.
She met Alexander’s eyes, seeking an answer.
His lips curled, whispering—
“It’s not over.”
