The Enemy Revealed

The murmur of the meeting clawed through the air, but Ivy’s ears had shut themselves down. Her throat felt raw, as if she’d swallowed shards of glass, and the sharp tang of panic lingered, metallic and bitter, on her tongue.

Her fingers clenched the edge of the mahogany table, nails biting into the varnish beneath. The conference room around her blurred—slick leather chairs, polished steel, the sterile gleam of glass walls framing a skyline swallowing the dying sun.

She forced herself to breathe.

Slow.

Measured.

But the words from earlier echoed in her head like a sinister refrain.

“The warning... the noose tightening...”

It wasn’t just a figure of speech anymore. It was real. Dangerous.

A shadow had stepped out of the gloom to claim its place at the table.

And Ivy was staring straight into its eyes.

Magnus Blackwood.

The name slipped from whispered tongues at exclusive charity galas. It was spoken with a mixture of fear and grudging respect in penthouse bars where deals worth millions traded hands over crystal tumblers. The man had a reputation—a dark tempest wrapped in tailor-made suits and razor-sharp smiles.

But no one had ever truly seen him until now.

Until he walked into that boardroom.

The chair opposite Ivy scraped back with cold precision as Magnus eased down into it, his presence swallowing the space like an eclipse. There was a subtle ripple in the air, a shift—like when a thunderstorm bends the wind suddenly, warning of the storm’s approach.

His eyes fixed on Ivy with a cool, unblinking intensity.

Black ice.

Nothing spared. Nothing sentimental.

Magnus leaned forward, fingers steepled, voice smooth—dangerous velvet.

“So, Miss Marshall,” he said, each word deliberate, “still clinging to the remnants of a dynasty crumbling beneath your feet?”

The room tightened, breaths held hostage.

Ivy’s lips pressed into a line, fight burning beneath her skin. “Magnus,” she answered, voice low but defiant. “I didn't expect you to grace us with your presence so soon.”

A ghost of a smile played on his lips, sharp and predatory.

“Neither did I,” he admitted. “But I thought it was time to make things... more interesting.”

His gaze flickered briefly to the files spread before her—documents containing Greyson’s latest acquisitions, his strategic moves. He knew. He always knew.

“You're playing a dangerous game,” Ivy said, heart pounding in tempo with the wild clatter of her thoughts. “Don’t forget who you’re dealing with.”

Magnus leaned back, exhaling softly. The scent of expensive cologne mixed with something colder, a faint trace of burnt leather.

“You’re right,” he said. “I’m not just dealing with Greyson Blackwood anymore. You’re in the equation now. And that complicates matters... delightfully.”

The lights flickered as an elevator dinged faintly in the distance, breaking the fragile silence. Ivy could almost taste the shimmer of sweat sliding down her spine.

She caught movement in the reflective glass behind Magnus—a flicker, a silhouette that vanished before her mind could register. Her breath hitched.

Had Magnus just acknowledged her? The hidden wedge between Greyson’s empire and hers had suddenly become exposed.

Her heartbeat thundered in her ears.

Because if Magnus planned to destroy Greyson by exposing her secret—then he needed to be closer than any outsider dared to dream.

Her voice caught—a whisper barely heard above the ambient hum.

“What do you want from me?”

Magnus’s eyes sharpened, a glint almost affectionate, cruel.

“Everything you’re trying to hide.”

And then—

A sudden knock at the glass door sliced through the tension, sharp and urgent.

Every eye snapped to the entrance.

Ivy’s stomach plummeted.

The visitor’s silhouette was backlit by the harsh hallway light, but even from here, the intensity of the gaze was unmistakable—cold, searching.

Closer than any enemy should be.

Closer than she dared to imagine.
