Chapter 3

Cold Calculations

The door clicked open with a chilling precision that swallowed the sparse light in the room.

Greyson stepped through the threshold, eyes sharp as shards of obsidian cutting through the fog of Ivy’s storming thoughts. His tailored suit pressed crisply against muscle and bone—a walking testament to control and cold ambition.

He didn’t speak immediately. Instead, he closed the distance with calm, measured strides, each step stripping away the brittle resolve Ivy had clung to since the contract loomed like a guillotine above her head.

Her pulse hammered a frantic rhythm against the cage of her ribs. That ink on the paper—a lie? A salvation? The storm pooled in her gaze, wild and reckless, but before she could meet his eyes, he held up a single finger.

“Wait.”

His voice was low, before cutting sharper, “You’re not ready for what this is, Ivy. Not for the game we’re stepping into.”

The room, already thick with tension, shifted. The air turned colder, sharper—as if the walls recognized the danger threading itself through their space.

She crossed her arms, wrestling her trembling hands into stillness. “Don’t assume I don’t understand. I’ve survived worse than signed contracts.”

Greyson’s lips curved into something resembling a smile, but it held no warmth. “Survival is the bare minimum. You want more than that. I want more than that. But surviving with open eyes means seeing what's waiting in the shadows.”

He stepped closer—too close—until the distance was a thread pulled taut between them.

“This marriage isn’t about appearances. It’s not about false smiles and staged alliances,” he said, voice dropping another octave, rich with unspoken iron. “It’s chess, Ivy. Calculated moves. Each piece in place to checkmate the enemy.”

She blinked. Enemy? “Whose enemy? Magnus Blackwood?”

A sharp nod. “Yes, but not just his. Others are watching.”

She swallowed hard. “Why me? Why now?”

Greyson’s eyes traced her face like an analyst dissecting a complex equation. “Because you have a secret, one that could tear down empires. Your family’s legacy... and mine. And because no one else is willing to play this game.”

Her fingers clenched into fists. “You mean use me.”

“Partner,” he corrected smoothly. “You and I, against a world that wants us broken.”

Ivy’s breath caught. “I don’t think I want to be your partner.”

“Choice is an illusion when survival’s at stake.”

The silence stretched before Greyson moved to the floor-to-ceiling window, staring out at the cityscape—a constellation of greed and power glittering under neon haze.

“The contract means we hold each other’s secrets like weapons. And if one of us falls, the other takes the hit. It’s brutal. And necessary.”

Her eyes followed the swirl of city lights. “And Magnus?”

Greyson’s hand clenched the window ledge. “He’s a dangerous ghost chasing mistakes from the past—a past filled with betrayals and blood.”

“What kind of mistakes?” Her voice dropped to a whisper.

Eyes narrowing, he finally revealed, “Secrets no one can risk unearthing. There are enemies who would kill to keep them buried.”

The weight of that hung between them, heavy and suffocating.

“Enemies…” Ivy repeated, tasting the word like poison in her mouth.

Before she could demand more, the faint tick of the grandfather clock shattered the quiet—a reminder that time was slipping through their fingers.

Her breath hitched as a whisper of movement drifted near the door.

Frozen, Ivy’s gaze snapped to Greyson.

He didn’t move. Not a muscle betrayed him.

Then, quietly, his lips barely parted.

“They’re closer than we think.”
