Chapter 7

Beneath the Surface

The heavy oak door slammed shut behind her with a dull thud, the echo reverberating like a gunshot in the cavernous hallway. Elena’s breath hitched, each inhale shallow, the stagnant air thick with the sickly perfume of old leather and cold marble. Her heart hammered against her ribcage—wild, unforgiving. The whispered threat still dangled in the shadows: “Tonight, she dies.” But here she was. Still breathing. Still alive.

A faint trickle of sweat slid down the hollow of her collarbone, mingling with the dust settling on her skin. Every nerve screamed to run—to vanish before the silence congealed into the next trap—but her feet were rooted. Frozen.

The lock had clicked from the inside, sealing her fate within the family estate’s innermost sanctum.

She crouched low, every muscle taut as wire beneath her blouse. Elena’s sharp eyes scanned the encompassing gloom, flitting over the ornate molding, the portraits of grim-faced ancestors whose painted eyes seemed to judge her intrusion.

A sudden creak from upstairs fractured the stillness. Footsteps—light, deliberate—paced somewhere beyond the grand staircase.

The walls themselves seemed to breathe, the mansion’s cold breath brushing against Elena’s neck. She swallowed against an uncomfortable tightness blossoming in her throat. Her fingers twitched, seeking the familiar weight of the dagger concealed beneath her jacket. But tonight, steel alone wouldn’t unravel the labyrinth ahead.

A tinkling sound caught her attention: something subtle, mechanical. Her gaze settled on the ancient grandfather clock standing guard in the corner of the hall. The pendulum swung sluggishly, its rhythm cruelly deliberate, as if keeping time on a slow, torturous countdown.

Her mind raced. If Damian wanted her dead, why did this house still harbor secrets he thought buried? Her boots shifted silently over the marble floor, a delicate choreography of caution.

She moved toward the clock, drawn by the faint metallic chime beneath the steady tick. Her fingers found a hidden seam along the side—not obvious to anyone but a careful eye trained on deception.

Elena pressed her palm, holding her breath. The clock’s body groaned—a muffled click—and a narrow panel slid outward, exposing a shallow compartment carved into the wood.

Inside, wrapped in brittle parchment yellowed by time, lay a document bound with an emerald green ribbon. The Varys family crest embossed in gold shimmered faintly when it caught the dim light.

The secret will.

Her pulse hammered. She knelt, the fabric of her skirt whispering against the floor. The edges of the paper crumbled slightly when she carefully untied the ribbon.

Her fingers trembled as she unfolded the brittle page, the faint scent of aged ink curling into the cool air.

Nothing about this was ordinary.

The will was not just a dry legal document—it was a carefully crafted manifesto, a map of loyalties and hidden bloodlines.

“To those who dare claim the throne, know this truth: the legacy you seek cannot rest on lies.” The elegant script flowed in an almost prophetic cadence.

Elena’s eyes flicked down, scanning names and clauses written in a spidery hand—clauses that contradicted everything Damian had wielded to maintain his grip.

Then, an unexpected signature sealed with a wax emblem: one she never expected to see again.

Her breath hitched as the inked words burned themselves into her memory.

“The rightful heir of the Varys empire is not my son, Damian, but a hidden branch, guarded from the world.”

Her fingers trembled, tracing the line beneath it like a lifeline.

The will unfurled a revelation sharp enough to slice through the coldest steel.

The secret heir.

Stronger claim.

Dark blood even Damian didn’t know.

A sound from the staircase. Footsteps descending fast — heavy, purposeful.

Elena snapped the will shut, cloaking its truth within her palm as the hall lights flickered—an ominous warning in this house of ghosts and betrayals.

In the shadows, a silhouette loomed, and Elena’s eyes fixed on the threshold—her world about to shatter… again.
