Chapter 5
The shadow lingered just inside the doorway, the faint drip of rain leaking from a soaked coat onto the polished floor. Elena’s breath hitched. The room’s dim lights caught the jagged cut of a smile—bitter, precise.
“Nicola,” Elena said, voice steady but icy, like the metal blade pressed just behind her ribs. “You’re late.”
Nicola stepped forward, closing the door softly behind him. His sharp eyes scanned the room, lingering on the mess of papers splayed across the table—financial ledgers, coded files, and photographs that glared like open wounds.
“Traffic.” The edge in his tone was thin, stretched tight over guilt. “Had to be sure no one followed.”
Elena’s throat tightened. Her gaze burned into him, cold and searching. “And yet you left me waiting for hours. Hours that felt like an eternity of silence.”
He shrugged, the movement too casual. “The truth doesn’t come on schedule, Elena.”
A flash of irritation sparked between them. She circled the table, fingers grazing the hard edges of her fractured plans, hunting for cracks wherever Nicola might have left them.
“You told me you were loyal.” Her voice dropped to a whisper that sliced the thick tension. “That you’d have my back no matter what.”
Nicola’s eyes flickered—then hardened. “I’m loyal—to the truth. And I don’t serve a lost cause.”
Elena caught the tremor in his hand when he reached for a thick manila envelope, its presence ominous against the sterile white.
“What’s that?” she demanded, stepping closer.
His lips twitched. “Evidence. Something I uncovered while following a thread Damian thought buried.”
The room smelled like nerves and damp wool, a storm threatening to unravel whatever fragile alliance they’d stitched together.
Inside the envelope, Elena’s fingers trembled as she pulled out a series of encrypted messages, their hunched characters cutting through the glow of her lamp like daggers. Her breath hitched on the first glance.
“They’re communications—damn… from one of Damian’s accounts. Coded, but unmistakable references to an... operation.” She traced the jagged lines under the cipher with a trembling finger. “An operation linked to the night I was framed.”
Nicola’s jaw clenched, eyes darkening under brows that tightened like a guillotine’s blade. “I told you. He wanted you gone before you got too close.”
Elena swallowed back the bitter acid swelling in her throat. Betrayal wasn’t just a word anymore; it was a living thing digging razor claws into the fragile core of every truth she knew.
“Why didn’t you tell me this before?” Her voice cracked slightly, raw with the weight of discovering the unseen knife at her back.
“Because I needed proof,” Nicola said quietly. “Real proof. This is it.”
A heavy silence settled between them, broken only by the soft patter of rain against the windows.
Elena folded the messages carefully, her eyes narrowing. “If this leaks, if Damian knows you’re onto him—”
“He won’t stop,” Nicola finished for her grimly.
Elena’s fists clenched, nails biting into her skin. “Then this stops here. We make our move.”
Suddenly, a subtle vibration hummed against the polished wood table. Elena’s phone, glowing with a notification.
She unlocked it with trembling fingers. A new message blinked on the screen—no sender, no signature. Just a single line:
“Keep digging, and the throne you seek will drown in blood you choose to ignore.”
Her stomach twisted, cold and heavy.
She looked up at Nicola, where the flicker of unease had cracked his composed mask.
“What did I tell you?” he whispered, voice raw with dread.
The war she’d waged was no longer hidden behind closed doors. It was here, breathing in the shadows, waiting to shatter everything.
Elena’s breath slowed, her eyes steeling with lethal intent as the storm outside surged anew. The game had just begun—and the board was bleeding.
The past was unraveling.
And so was trust.
