Chapter 13

Crossroads of Fate

Elena’s heartbeat hammered against her ribs, a staccato drum fueling the adrenaline in her veins. Damian’s voice, effortless and cold, had sliced through the dimly lit room like a razor. The shadows behind him seemed to swallow the flickering light, swallowing hope itself.

She swallowed hard, her throat tight enough to choke on steel.

“This ends tonight,” she said, voice a cracked whip of conviction.

Damian’s crooked smile spread, one corner lifting like a predator savoring the inevitable kill. “Bold. But naïve.”

Before she could react, a sudden roar shattered the tense hush. The heavy, reinforced glass wall exploded inward, shards glittering like lethal stars caught in a storm.

Gunfire erupted.

Instinct launched her sideways—muscle memory honed sharp by years of survival. Glass shards sliced through the rich carpet, the acrid scent of ozone and burnt circuits clawing at her senses.

Damian dove in the opposite direction, cold laughter trailing. “Playing both sides always ends messy, Elena.”

The attackers swarmed—black-clad, masked—movements synchronized and merciless. But they halted a breath before her, guns lowering, hesitant.

A voice—rough, familiar—cut through the chaos.

“Elena! Down here!”

She tensed, eyes locking onto a figure emerging from the shadows beyond the shattered glass—a man whose features balled defiance and desperation into one bruised knot.

Jarek.

The leader of the underground faction she had agonized over trusting.

His gaze held a flicker of something raw—relief, worry, a warning unread.

She didn’t hesitate. Sliding low, slipping past the line of attackers, she reached him.

“Jarek. What—”

“No time.” His hand was rough, fingers clamping onto her arm with iron urgency. “They know you’re here. You’re compromised. We need out.”

The room erupted again—gunfire and shouts spiraled into a cacophony that pressed against her skull.

Elena grabbed his arm, the clash of her desperation and his resolve sparking a fragile alliance.

“Where’s the exit?”

“Follow me.”

They moved like shadows, slipping through narrow corridors lit only by the pale glow of emergency lights. Elena’s mind raced as she tried to piece together the trap. How had Damian known? Was it a leak?

An icy whisper crawled up her spine—the possibility that someone inside the faction had betrayed her.

They reached a stairwell, descending into the bowels of the building. The air grew thick with damp, concrete, and something else—fear.

Behind them, the pursuit echoed like thunder.

“Elena,” Jarek’s voice cracked, “you need to trust me. It’s the only way.”

Her fingers twitched at her side, craving the weight of the dagger she’d left behind in the chaos.

Trust.

A word wrenched from the ashes of her burned past.

She hesitated, eyes flicking to the dark corners where shadows moved like ghosts.

“We’re at a crossroads,” she whispered, the chill of betrayal wrapping tighter than any chains.

Suddenly, a metallic click—a faint but sharp note that froze the marrow in her bones.

From the side, a flash of steel aimed at Jarek’s back.

“No!”

A guttural shout tore from Elena’s throat as she lunged forward.

The blade sliced through the air with deadly intent.

But before she could reach him, the world fractured—pain exploded in her side, hot and violent.

She crumpled, fingers scraping against cold concrete as the light in her vision flickered.

Jarek’s horrified gasp was the last thing she heard before darkness swallowed her whole.
