Chapter 10

Web of Lies

Elena’s breath caught, fragmented like broken glass in her chest. The words echoed in the cavernous space of her mind: They know where we are. And they want to end this. The faint hum of the city outside seeped through the cracked window, a dissonant lullaby drowning under the weight of looming danger.

Her knees trembled beneath her, but desperation anchored her feet. She leaned against the cold steel frame of the narrow room, fingers clenched into fists tight enough to carve crescent moons into her palms. A shiver streaked down her spine—not from cold—but from the raw, gnawing ache of betrayal slicing deeper than any blade.

“Lena,” came a voice, low and cautious but threaded with urgency.

Elena snapped around. Mara stood in the dim light, her silhouette blurred by the flicker of a dying candle. The faint scent of jasmine clung to her, an ironic softness in the shadowed warzone they’d retreated to.

“I need to talk,” Mara’s eyes glistened, but there was steel beneath the surface—something Elena hadn’t seen before.

“After everything,” Elena said, voice sharp, brittle. “Why should I even listen?”

Mara swallowed hard, stepping forward, the floor creaking beneath her weight. “Because I’m still on your side. I’m the only one who is.”

The claim hovered, thin as smoke. Elena’s gaze narrowed. This was a precipice. A long, twisting path tangled with hidden traps.

“How long?” Elena demanded, each word a measured strike.

Mara’s eyes flickered away, then snapped back with reluctant honesty. “Too long.”

Beneath the frayed edges of Mara’s confession flickered a flicker of defiance. “You’re a double agent,” Elena accused. The accusation was a stone thrown into still water, its ripples threatening to drown what little trust remained.

Mara nodded slowly, like a drowning woman accepting the tide. “I meant to tell you. I was going to, but…” The pause stretched, pregnant with unsaid truths.

“But what?” Elena tilted her head, every shred of resolve sharpening. “Damian’s poison is stronger than you?”

“No,” Mara whispered. “Because I worked for him doesn’t mean I belonged to him.” Her voice cracked just a little. “I wanted to protect you—all this time. Even if it meant deceiving you.”

Elena’s eyes burned, the raw heat of years of lies and stolen moments colliding in a storm. “Protect me? By selling me out? By feeding him our plans?”

Mara stepped closer, voice lowering. “To keep you alive.” Her breath hitched, a tremor betraying her façade. “Damian’s reach... it’s deeper than you know. I had to keep him close to keep you one step ahead. But it’s failing.”

The room shrank, walls closing in like the tightening grip of a noose. Elena swallowed the bitter taste of betrayal laced with a grim kernel of truth.

“So why now?” Elena pressed. “Why come clean in the dark—when Damian’s claws are already sinking in?”

Mara’s fingers twitched, restless. “Because things have changed,” she admitted, voice slicing through the silence. “Damian’s planning something bigger. Something even I didn’t foresee. And if we don’t act soon, everything we've fought for ends in ashes.”

Elena’s heart pounded, every nerve ignited with raw adrenaline. “Tell me.”

“I heard something—when I was with him last night,” Mara said, eyes darting toward the cracked door as if the shadows were listening. “A name. A place. A plan he’s been hiding even from his closest advisors.”

Elena stepped forward, the flickering candlelight catching the determined set of her jaw. “What is it?”

Before Mara could answer, she hesitated, weighed down by an invisible burden.

With a voice barely above a whisper—a confession drenched in danger—Mara revealed the secret plan. Not some whispered plot or vague hint. Details so precise and chilling they could dismantle the empire Damian had built.

A plan known only to Damian himself.

And now, Elena realized, the game had morphed into something far deadlier than she ever imagined.

The walls of the room seemed to close tighter, the flickering shadows twisting into sinister shapes. The line between friend and foe had blurred beyond recognition.

Elena’s gaze locked onto Mara’s—a silent challenge, a question that demanded an answer but trembled with fear beneath her fierce exterior.

What was the cost of this secret? And how far was she willing to go to unravel it?

Outside, the city pulsed with indifferent lights, a sprawling labyrinth of promises and peril.

Inside, the war had just turned personal.

“Tell me everything,” Elena urged, voice slicing through the tension like a blade.

Mara’s lips parted, ready to expose the fracture at the heart of their shattered throne.

But the words hung in the air—heavy, dangerous.

A sudden knock echoed from the door, sharp enough to fracture the fragile calm like glass underfoot.

Both women froze, eyes locking in a flash of primal fear.

The knock came again—this time insistent, unyielding.

Elena’s pulse thundered against her temples as the silence stretched between them.

The war had arrived at their doorstep.

And the web of lies was tightening…
