Chapter 9
The cold air tasted metallic in Kaelen’s lungs, sharp as shattered glass beneath his tongue. His knuckles scraped raw against the cracked console panel—fingernails torn from a silent scream. The corridor’s flickering lights stuttered overhead, casting fractured shadows that danced like ghosts of a life once unbroken.
The venomous echo of that smile—Soriath Vex’s smile—rattled his mind like a dropped relic. What are you? The question hovered, suffocating, as if the words were tendrils tightening around his throat.
He stumbled forward, breath ragged, pounding through the half-lit sprawl of the outpost’s underbelly where every shard of metal and whisper of circuitry seemed laced with the empire’s cold promise—control. Control. Control.
Yet here he was: a rebel, an outcast forged in defiance. Or so he had believed.
His fingers trembled as he pulled open a rusted service hatch, a spiraling tunnel yawning down like a descent into his own abyss. The hum of forgotten machines and the faint, acrid scent of burnt ozone pressed around him—a funeral dirge in metallic tones.
What am I? The question hammered again.
Kaelen clenched his jaw, the taste of bile rising. The betrayal was no shadow to be feared—it was a birthmark burned into his flesh.
His boots echoed hollow as he descended, the hatch groaning like a wounded beast.
The underlab was a vault of secrets. Dust-caked terminals blinked weakly, faded data cores blinking remnants of forbidden experiments. Kaelen’s breath snagged when the faded insignia caught his eye: the emblem of the Crown Genetic Projects.
His heart stuttered.
He crouched beside a fractured datapad, its screen flickering in fractured blues. Fingers slick with grease and trembling, he coaxed it to life.
Files surfaced—encoded diaries, experimental logs, blurred images of faceless figures beneath clinical lights. The name “Project Veilborn” blinked at him like a brand.
His eyes scanned: “Subject: KV-928. Genomic augmentation unsuccessful until psionic suppression serum introduced. Neural divergence detected. Promising resistance traits.”
Kaelen swallowed. Those words were a mirror, fractured but unmistakable.
KV-928. That’s me.
A stifled gasp barely escaped. The room tilted, the walls breathing in echoes of futures stitched with lies. His mind seethed with fragments of silenced memories, flashes where his mind fought impossible chains.
Engineered.
The revelation slammed against him harder than any attack.
A synthetic child, crafted to be the empire’s ideal weapon—but something twisted. His will had never succumbed, not fully. The psionic chains that shackled others snapped within him. But at what cost?
He staggered back, breath catching as a tortured scream clawed at the edge of his conscience—no, not a scream, a memory.
Cold hands gripping his wrist. Sterile light burning his eyes open. Three sharp injections.
The faint, cold voice of the scientist: “Resistance is instability, subject KV-928. Veilborn integration must proceed.”
Kaelen sank to the floor, the steel cold searing through his skin like a knife’s ghost.
For a moment, the lonely weight of existence crushed him. The empire had birthed him from darkness, a devil born of their desire for absolute power.
Voices whispered, voices he’d buried beneath rebellion’s fury. Were the years of fight, of loss, of hope, just the empire's cruel experiment? Was he nothing more than a product forged to become the very nightmare he hunted?
He swallowed hard, nausea swirling—then rage flared, raw and scorching.
No.
He was more.
A guttural sound tore free as he clawed at the datapad, hunger for truth igniting every nerve.
Shadows hid another file—encrypted, but the scanner peeled back the layers: Project Veilborn—final phase: Psionic Dominion interface. Gene-engineered catalysts for mind-control resistance, designed to counteract veiled dominance algorithms.
The truth seethed beneath the circuit skeletons in this tomb.
Kaelen’s fingers clenched into fists. The empire’s mind chains—they sought to enslave the galaxy with psychic puppetry. But he was their wildcard—designed to unravel it from within.
Suddenly, footsteps thundered overhead. Metal boots echoing, precise, deliberate.
He scrambled through a tangle of scavenged cables, squeezing beneath a collapsed crate. Heart hammering, breath brittle.
The hatch groaned, and a figure loomed into the pale corridor light.
“Searching for more secrets, rebel scum?” The voice snarled—Deep. Cut with ice and menace.
Kaelen’s skin prickled.
Soriath Vex.
The High Chancellor’s shadow darkened the threshold, eyes cold fire scanning.
Kaelen froze— torn between fight and flight, his heartbeat raging like a war drum.
“You think you’re the revolution’s vanguard,” Soriath drawled, “but you’re a product… a Veilborn engineered to serve.”
The words stabbed deeper than any blade.
Kaelen’s mind raced, the prison of his origin twisting into a labyrinthine trap. How much was his defiance his own?
A shudder rattled along his spine as Soriath smiled, cruel and unblinking.
“And now… we’ll see if the puppet masters’ child dances to our tune.”
The corridor darkened as Soriath stepped closer, the empire’s design closing in.
Time fractured.
And beneath the veil of deception, Kaelen faced the shattering question—
Had he been engineered to become what he now fights against?
The knock of inevitability thundered in the silence.
