Chapter 3

Wraith Among Stars

The station’s sirens clawed at the thin air like wild beasts. Kaelen’s breath hitched, each ragged gasp pinned beneath the madness of alarms—shrilly, shouted, relentless. Somewhere behind him, metallic footsteps thundered, echoing in the cramped corridor where shadow clung like blood.

He did not stop.

His heartbeat hammered in his ears—a frantic tattoo that outran the mad chase coursing through Narcisus Station’s lifeblood. The cramped metal walls pulsed cold as raindrops down rivulets, slick with sweat and spilled fear. Kaelen’s fingers tightened on the data chip buried deep in an inner pocket. It burned cold, alien and vital—a pulse of secret light in the darkness.

“No more hiding,” he whispered—not to any ears but his own, a fragile tether to a soul fraying under the Dominion’s merciless gaze.

The Dominion’s hunters were close. He could feel their presence—a shadow stretching long and relentless. Psi-fractured eyes with cold, mechanical intent seeking the rebel phantom they branded a traitor. Once a gifted prodigy in their mind-command projects, now a ghost with the power to resist, a living toxin on their control grid.

He tasted copper on his tongue: blood—or perhaps the sharp sting of desperation.

His associates? Gone, scattered like ashes on the void winds. The faithful few who’d sheltered him vanished into the ether—some after last whispers of warning, others swallowed by faster, darker fates.

Footsteps thundered again—harder, nearer. Somehow, Kaelen skirted the edges of the surveillance net, ducking beneath grated vents, slipping through cold maintenance hatches meant only for specks of dust, never for hunted ghosts.

Every flicker of holographic display burned past him like cold flames, casting blue shadows over skin stretched tight with tension, eyes darting like starved wolves.

He reached a junction and paused—the junction where every path meant death or salvation. The station’s layout had once been a friend, a memory carved in muscle and reflex. Now, a maze closing in.

A crackling voice burst through his comm-link—the grating signal flared with static and unfamiliar urgency—“Kaelen Voss, this is Jetto... I can’t hold the line—Schriox squad incoming!”

The message scrambled, dying in flares.

His chest ached.

Jetto—his last trustworthy ally on this forsaken station. The weight of desperation burned in those few broken syllables. Kaelen’s pulse surged; he jerked into motion, limbs coiled by years living on razor edges.

He dove through a narrow side passage, lungs pumping icy air laced with charged particles and the faint scent of ozone. The corridor walls hummed with latent energy—the station’s nervous system alive and humming beneath cold steel.

Suddenly, a blaze of light stabbed the darkness—a blaster round whizzed past, sizzling to singe a panel beside his hand.

Kaelen slammed into a bulkhead, the metal cold and unforgiving.

His jaw clenched, muscles taut.

From somewhere above, a faint metallic clatter skittered—a spider drone, harvester of secrets, a killer in miniature.

He sprinted.

The data chip pulsed—a beacon of forbidden truth.

A command voice shattered the cacophony, sharp and cruel: “Stop him! The traitor runs. He carries our undoing.”

Kaelen’s throat thickened with raw fire.

He couldn’t stop. Not now. Not ever.

The corridors twisted—unfamiliar and labyrinthine beneath the weight of betrayal. The Dominion had turned allies into enemies, friends into spies.

His mind flashed with fractured memories—promises broken, whispered confessions, cold betrayals behind jackboots and masks.

Time thinned.

Behind him, footsteps multiplied—echoes of inescapable judgment.

The station’s gravity shifted as he bulked into a cargo elevator, slamming the emergency override.

The clamor faded, swallowed by the grinding climb.

Within the cramped metal box, air thickened with desperation.

A screen flickered before him, masked in encrypted distortion—a faint signal bled through the static, barely recognizable.

Kaelen’s brow furrowed, breath faltering.

The comm crackled, a garbled, haunting voice slithering from the speakers—the voice distorted, warped beyond recognition—but beneath the twisted modulation, a hint surfaced. His own voice, twisted into a spectral echo.

“Kaelen… help…”

The word shattered the silence like a knife.

His hand trembled on the console.

Who had taken it? Who was using his name like a scar in the dark?

The elevator’s ascent ground onward—cold, merciless.

His eyes locked on the screen.

Fear flared—a fresh blade beneath the skin.

The rebellion’s shadows had just grown deeper.

And somewhere in the dark, a wraith was stirring.

Kaelen’s lips parted in a silent vow.

“I will find you.”

Then the screen went dead.
