Chapter 15
The searing light blinked out like a shutter snapping closed. The air hung thick, charged and simmering, tasting of ozone and burnt circuitry.
Kaelen lay sprawled on the metal floor, fingers scorched, a buzzing hum ringing in his ears. His vision swam, edges doubled, but something—a faint vibration beneath his boots—anchored him back. The desert chill of the abyssal vault had fled beneath the heatwave. Around him, rebels groaned, clutching ripped uniforms and shielding raw eyes.
"Soriath was right," Jara gasped from her crouch under a twisted console. Her voice was raw, trembling, like a blade grinding against stone. "You're not ready for this."
Kaelen coughed, tasted blood and dust. His chest heaved—not just from the blast, but from the revelation burning hotter: the weapon beneath them had awakened.
The vault’s walls pulsed with faint blue veins of energy—alive, humming with ancient intent.
“Ready or not,” Kaelen hissed, struggling upright, “we don’t have a choice.”
He crawled towards the device’s core, the legendary weapon whispered in rebel myth—the Nullifier. It was the only thing known to disrupt the empire’s psychic chains. For centuries, no one knew if it was real or just propaganda to incite hope. Now, it sprawled in front of him: a sleek orb nestled in a lattice of translucent wires, glowing faintly, like a heartbeat trapped in glass.
“Kaelen... you don’t understand what this thing can do,” Vex’s cold voice echoed suddenly from the shadows, smooth and venomous. The High Chancellor stepped from the dark, his silvered eyes gleaming with malice. “It’s not just a disruptor—it’s a beacon, a trap. You set off the pulse without knowing.”
Kaelen’s breath hitched. The orb throbbed beneath his trembling fingers. He saw a flicker of movement behind Vex—glints of armored enforcers, weapons trained like black hawks.
“You want to control minds? I’ll show you what real chaos looks like,” Kaelen growled.
He slammed a palm down on the orb.
Electric blue arcs exploded outward in a silent wave—then everything stilled.
Outside the vault, somewhere in the endless black between stars, lights blinked on a distant rebel ship. A signal pulsed faint and urgent—a call for help sent by the weapon’s activation.
But from where?
Kaelen’s heart pounded as cold dread clawed deep. The war had just escalated beyond their reckoning.
And the real hunt... was only beginning.
