Chapter 1
The stale metallic scent of recycled air clung to Kaelen’s throat as the cramped maintenance corridor hummed with a low, unsteady vibration. A dim strip of luminescent panels flickered overhead, casting long, restless shadows that crawled along the ribbed hull plating. His fingers grazed the cold bulkhead, tracing its scars — microscopic fissures like ancient veins, each a memory of a past strike or desperate repair.
Kaelen pressed himself against the wall, every sense straining. The distant murmur of anti-psionic enforcers patrolling the corridors—a rhythmic thud of booted feet, the mechanical click of servos on their hardsuits—settled into his bones like a warning pulse. His heartbeat jackhammered in sync, fingernails digging into his palm as faint static buzzed just behind his temples.
He was invisible but not safe.
Mind-shielding—his forbidden gift—coursed beneath his skin like liquid fire, a secret fortress against the Empire’s pervasive psychic probes. It was a sensation both a refuge and a curse: a cold barrier isolating him from a universe of whispers and lies. Every rival thought, every hypnotic suggestion bouncing around the Dominion’s networks, ricocheted against his mental fortress, but no friend ever slipped inside. He was an island, a ghost drifting just beyond detection.
And that made him dangerous.
A sharp hiss from down the corridor tightened his chest. Two Dominion enforcers emerged from the shadows — their visors aglow with crimson lenses hacking the dim light, outfitted in sleek black armor that shimmered with intricate psionic dampeners. Kaelen’s breath hitched; instinct urged him to bolt, but the enclosed space swallowed noise like a black hole.
“Hold tight,” he whispered under his breath, tightening his grip on the small data shard hidden beneath the folds of his jacket. It was the last vestige of a broken alliance—a fragment of encrypted truth that could fracture the Dominion’s iron grip if he could just get it to the Underground.
The enforcers paused, scanning the darkness with neural implants humming. Kaelen felt it—an invasive probing brush, a psychic tendril searching, testing. His shield flared, a sudden tempest rising in his mind that forced back the assault if only inches. Beads of sweat prickled at his temples, the effort draining.
His jaw clenched. A misstep now would mean capture. Or worse.
“Scan complete,” one grunted through a modulated voice, their cold eyes narrowing behind the visor. They exchanged a look, an electric pulse of silent command linking them. Kaelen froze, muscles coiled beneath his worn jacket.
Then, as if summoned by the intensity, a piercing alarm shattered the tense silence.
Red lights flooded the corridor, pistons hissed, and a deep voice thundered over the com system:
“Alert. Psychic breach detected in Sector E9. Immediate containment required.”
The enforcers bolted down the passage, boots pounding like war drums on the decking, their visors now burning a more aggressive shade of molten scarlet.
Kaelen’s stomach dropped. He stayed pressed against the cold wall, eyes darting to a narrow hatch beside him.
The psychic crackdown—always a careful, surgical strike—was spiraling out of control. That wasn’t standard procedure. Not in Sector E9.
He barely had time to process when the soft thud of a power dampener grenade landed inches from his heel. The cylinder hissed, releasing a mist that stained the air with chemical greenhouse—enough to scramble residual psionic resistance temporarily.
His shield flickered, fracturing like shattered glass against the venomous gas.
His hand slammed down on the shard, sweat slick against cold metal. This was no hunt for a stray rioter. Something had shifted—an unseen trigger uncoiling.
Kaelen pushed himself away from the wall, inhaling raggedly through a clenched jaw and darting for the nearest maintenance ladder. The corridor behind him erupted in chaos—a storm of screaming psionic feedback, shattered control consoles, and frantic, desperate orders crackling over open coms.
Something was wrong.
Deeper wrong than he had ever seen.
As he scrambled upwards into the drydock’s shadowed belly, a spine-chilling scream tore through the ship—human, fractured, raw. He risked a glance back toward the main deck.
There—through reinforced viewports, a searing blue glare pulsed across the orbital skyline of Elysium Prime, and below it, psychic enforcers writhing in spasms of unseen assault, collapsing in heaps where their own technology turned traitor.
Kaelen’s breath caught. The Empire’s deadly mind-grid was unraveling.
But what had triggered this new, brutal wave of psychic wrath?
He tightened his fingers around the data shard.
And the ghosts of a broken past whispered the answer was coming.
