Chapter 4

The Crimson Power

The air snapped. A razor’s breath cutting through the thick, stale haze that pulsed inside the crumbling safehouse.

Kael’s eyes snapped open, shards of distant neon bleeding through the cracked window, painting mosaic scars on the peeling walls. His lungs screamed for air, but something heavy—like cold iron—pressed against his chest.

His vision swam in and out, a cruel pendulum between lucidity and darkness.

“Kael!” Mara’s voice cracked—a ragged rope of panic. She hovered over him, hands trembling as she fought to stifle the rising chaos in her veins. “Are you—?”

Before she could finish, the room’s brittle silence shattered like glass.

Shadowed footsteps. Heavy, precise. Too close.

Kael’s body coiled—muscle memory igniting with unnatural swiftness. The threats that had stalked him for years, the betrayal, the blood spilled—all surged like a tidal wave inside.

He elbowed Mara aside without thought, rolling to the side just as the door burst fully open.

The figure that slipped in was cloaked in black leather, face obscured beneath a low hood, knife glinting dully in the sickly yellow light. The motion was lightning-quick, a lethal strike aimed for Kael’s throat.

Instinct screamed.

Pain blossomed then vanished.

Time fractured.

Kael’s hands flashed up—two fingers grazed the blade’s edge. A shockwave vibrated along his arm, a searing heat blooming from his core like molten lava twisting beneath his skin.

The attacker froze, eyes wide but unmoving—an invisible wall pushing back.

Kael grunted, teeth clenched. His heart hammered louder than the gunshots echoing outside, every beat a drum of war.

With a violent shove, the assailant was thrown backward, crashing against the battered table, splintering wood splintering beneath the unexpected force.

Kael scrambled to his feet, muscles burning, breath ragged.

“Who the hell are you?” he growled, voice raw, dripping with ferocity.

The hooded figure hissed with pain, rising slowly. But as the shadow staggered, Kael’s chest flared again—an electric pulse radiating outward, muscles rippling and skin prickling with an alien energy that felt... both terrifying and familiar.

Mara’s mouth fell open. “Kael—what’s happening to you?”

His fingers brushed his neck, then his forearm. A sudden chill crawled up his spine.

In the dim light, something glimmered beneath the skin—a faint, crimson pattern carved deep like a brand burning from within. Ancient lines, jagged and ornate, tracing shapes he didn’t consciously remember learning. The pain was subtle but insistent, like an old wound awakening.

“Not now,” he muttered, voice tight with shock.

The attacker’s eyes narrowed, pain twisting into fury. “You don’t know what you’ve unleashed.”

Kael swallowed hard, something primal awakening beneath his ribs—a power dark and wild, clawing to break free.

Mara leapt forward, grabbing his arm. “Don’t push it. Whatever that is—”

His fingers grazed the crimson pattern again.

It felt alive.

Beating.

Connected.

Kael’s mind spun, a storm of adrenaline and ancient whispers flooding the empty corners of his memories.

“Lucien’s gone too far this time,” he whispered. “This... this changes everything.”

Behind the attacker, the fading neon outside flickered violently. The city breathed, uncertain, its shadows twisting.

And beneath Kael’s skin, the secret burned deeper, undeniable and real.

He had not just survived.

He had become something far more dangerous.

The crimson power was awake.

And it was waiting.
