Chapter 17

Lucien’s Shadow

The elders’ narrowed eyes sliced through the dense fog curling from the streetlamps outside. Their breaths came out in slow, measured clouds, but the silence between them seethed—thick like venom pooling beneath silk.

Kael’s fingers twitched against the cool hilt of his knife, every nerve bristling like a taut wire ready to snap. The air was saturated with unspoken threats, shadows folding around their faces, twisting the features into masks of cold calculation.

Outside, the city’s heartbeat gnawed at the walls—a distant siren’s wail fading into the buzz of neon buzzing high above cracked asphalt. Somewhere in the night, a garbage can clattered, alarm shrieking through the alley, but inside this room, time slowed, each breath a countdown.

Lucien sat rigid, pale eyes glinting in the dim light. His mouth was a thin slash, lips pressed tight like the edges of a blade. Around him, lieutenants shifted, exchanging cryptic glances, their loyalty as fractured as the city itself.

From across the heavy oak table, Lucien’s voice cut the silence with cold precision.

“This city bleeds beneath me, and those foolish enough to touch the wound—” He struck the table with a hard fist, the wood rebounding with a dull crack. “They will drown in their own blood.”

His words rolled in the stale air, wrapping around every soul like a poison thread, pulling tight.

Chef, the burly enforcer with a scar slashing from temple to jaw, leaned forward, eyes gleaming. "Orders, boss? We’ll clean house. No one spared."

Lucien’s gaze snapped to him, icy and precise. “Not just cleanup. Hunt every whisper of sympathy for Kael Draven. His allies are shadows—slipping through the cracks.”

There was a flicker—almost imperceptible—a tightening around Lucien’s lips. “Bring me names. Accomplices. Anyone who dares breathe his name.”

The room shifted. Trust dissolved into an atmosphere thick with paranoia.

At the back, a slender figure leaned against the shadowed wall, features swallowed by darkness but fingers twitching with restless energy. She listened—waited.

Lucien’s eyes narrowed like a hawk scented blood from a mile away.

“We cannot allow this rebellion to sprout,” he muttered, voice a low thunder. “If Kael wants to challenge me… he’ll find only corpses.”

A lieutenant’s phone buzzed sharply—a staccato intrusion. Lucien frowned but waved it off. “What’s that?”

“Just a... a message. Probably nothing,” the man stammered, eyes flickering toward the shadowed figure again.

Something inside Lucien snapped, a razor’s edge cutting through the veneer. He stood suddenly, the chair scraping against the floor like a warning.

“Enough games,” he said, voice hard as iron. “Identify every snake in this room. I want loyalty—pure and raw. Anyone harboring secrets for Draven becomes my enemy.”

A tremble passed through the room, as if the very air contracted under the weight of imminent carnage.

Chef cracked his knuckles, anticipation glittering in his eyes. “Blood will paint the streets red again.”

Lucien’s hand darted to the side, snatching a sealed envelope from the desk.

“Tonight,” he declared, “we strike from the shadows. No mercy.”

The shadowed woman shifted—slow, deliberate—a glint of steel catching the scant light on a hidden blade.

Lucien’s gaze locked onto her, the room holding its breath.

In that moment, the phone buzzed again, sharper.

He snatched it up.

A single word flashed on the screen.

“Traitor.”

The dagger poised in the dark didn’t move.

Lucien’s voice dropped to a harsh whisper, venom dripping from every syllable.

“Show yourself.”

The room shrank around them, every second stretching taut like a drawn bowstring.

And then, from the depths of the shadows, a smile flickered—cold, knowing, deadly.

Kael’s spy had been hiding in plain sight.

Lucien’s shadow was longer—and darker—than anyone had guessed.
