Chapter 13
The clamor of the city dimmed, folding into a low drone beneath Kael’s skin. The words echoed—“Time to answer for everything”—slick and cold, like a blade slicing through thick fog. His chest tightened; breath hitched in a ragged rasp. A storm churned behind his eyes, wild and hungry, yet tethered by a cage wrought from months of silence and loss.
He didn’t move.
Outside the cracked window of the rusted warehouse loft, the neon lights of the city flickered through a venetian blind. They bathed his face in fractured shards of red and blue—like fractured glass reflecting back a man shattered but unbroken.
The coarse leather of his jacket creaked as Kael pressed a palm to the wall, fingers splayed, grounding himself against the chill that had seeped into his bones. Somewhere deep in his gut, a slow-burning ember flared hotter. Not ready. Not yet. But the hunger pulsing behind his ribs insisted the reckoning was coming—fast, merciless, inevitable.
A slow, deliberate knock at the door cracked the silence.
Kael’s eyes snapped to the jagged silhouette waiting in the doorway—Mara, sharp-eyed and taut, the shadows playing across her face like a huntress’s mask. Her lips pressed into a thin line.
“Lucien’s men are tightening,” she said, voice low but urgent. “Tonight won’t pass without blood.”
Kael’s jaw clenched.
“Then we make them bleed first,” he said, voice harsh as grit rasping over stone.
She nodded once, slipping inside, the door clicking shut behind her.
But far beyond the city streets, where neon had yet to drip and madness had yet to coil, a shadow stirred.
A figure lurked among the skeletal remains of an abandoned rooftop garden, hidden beneath a threadbare hood.
Eyes like molten silver scanned the flickering skyline, absorbing Kael’s every move—the tension carving lines across his face, the silent war raging behind his gaze.
A small, almost imperceptible smile curved the watcher’s thin lips, a predator’s gleam flashing bright in the dark.
From deep inside a worn leather satchel, the watcher withdrew a slim, immaculately crafted communicator—black as midnight, humming faintly with encrypted signals.
Fingers, long and elegant but edged with cold precision, tapped twice.
The response was immediate—a voice crackling with cold authority sliced through the static.
“Speak.”
“Target is volatile but unbroken,” the watcher’s voice slipped smooth like silk, laced with dark amusement. “The Crimson Underlord burns with the same fire. A dangerous spark.”
A pause, heavy as a guillotine’s blade.
Lucien’s reply buzzed low, icy.
“Then it’s time we harness that fire before it consumes us both.”
The watcher’s smile deepened into a promise—one carved from shadows and steel.
“There’s a new alliance waiting to be forged,” the watcher whispered into the communicator.
“An alliance that will shatter his world.”
The city’s distant sirens wailed, but for the watcher, the real game had just begun.
