Awakening from Ashes

The sharp sting of acrid smoke clawed at Kael Draven’s throat as his eyes snapped open. The ceiling above was a fractured mess of peeling plaster and spiderweb cracks, dim light from a cracked window slicing through dust motes that danced like restless ghosts. His body lay sprawled across an uneven mattress that smelled of stale sweat and rusted metal—an abandoned safehouse tucked in the city’s forgotten veins.

A dry rasp rattled in his chest when he tried to breathe, each inhale dragging shards of grime deeper into his lungs. His skin crawled beneath a gritty layer—something sticky and cold—but his mind thrashed against the fog binding it like a drowning man fighting for air.

Fragments of memory flared and vanished: sharp silhouettes of gunfire, a back alley slick with rain and blood, a face—Lucien’s. The name tasted like poison.

“Where—” His voice cracked, a desert wind tearing through cracked lips.

He raised a trembling hand, fingers twitching unnaturally, as if disconnected from him. The knuckles glinted red, but it wasn’t blood—it shimmered like molten ink, writhing beneath his skin. A faint heat pulsed there, crawling upward, igniting nerve endings with a fire that shouldn’t be there.

Light from the broken window caught on his eyes. The familiar obsidian orbs he’d worn like armor now felt alien. Searching, he flexed his fingers. Electricity buzzed faintly—a soft crackle like static whispering under his skin.

This power…

His thoughts crashed against a mountainous wall of confusion. He remembered the empire, the throne, the sharp sting of betrayal—a brutal descent into ash. But everything that came after? A blank abyss.

Outside, the city’s heartbeat faltered in distant sirens and the low hum of neon floods bathing cracked streets in cold blue. Somewhere beyond—a symphony of rusted engines and whispered threats—life carried on, indifferent to the fallen king struggling to rise.

Kael sat up with a gasp, every movement wracking his muscles with sour ache. The room shifted like a half-forgotten nightmare: crates stacked against crumbling walls, a shattered mirror reflecting a stranger’s haunted eyes.

“It’s me,” he muttered. “I’m—” Words choked as a searing pulse rolled through his palm again. He clenched his fist, air shimmering along the edges of his skin. “Reborn.”

Beneath the tattered window’s one flickering bulb, something cold and hard nestled buried in the mattress. He reached down, fingers closing around a smooth object. A dagger—the grip wrapped in midnight leather, glinting faintly in the muted glow. He pulled it free, eyes sharp despite the haze. Old instincts, raw and jagged, reawakened like ghosts.

The city’s noise dimmed—then softened into silence. Something shifted outside, subtle but tangible. A shadow deeper than night pressed against the cracked door.

His breath hitched.

The footsteps came—slow, deliberate, merciless. Each step a promise of death carved in shadow.

Kael’s eyes narrowed, ice crystallizing behind his reckless pulse. The underworld had not forgotten him. Lucien had not ended this war.

And in this fragile moment of awakening, one thing burned clear:

They were coming for him.

The blade whispered in his grasp as the door creaked.

Kael held his breath. The hunt had begun.
