Chapter 7
Elias’ chest heaved, each breath a ragged echo hammering in his ears. Silence swelled thick around the room as Seline’s footsteps faded beyond the heavy door. The tension didn’t break; it layered, a suffocating fog closing in tight enough to choke hope itself.
His fingers curled into fists, knuckles white as ice. The weight of what they’d glimpsed—a shard of fate—pressed down like an anvil. The Oracle’s secrets lay just beyond reach, cloaked in shadows darker than the void between stars.
“Did you see that?” Mara’s voice was barely a whisper, trembling, yet sharp enough to slice through the quiet.
Elias shifted, eyes still fixed on the door. “She knows we’re here. It’s only a matter of time before the walls have ears.”
Tension snapped beneath the surface. Calen paced the cramped space, boots scraping against the cold stone floor. “We can’t wait. Not if we want to stop this onslaught. The Cache in the stronghold—their archives hold answers no prophecy dares reveal.”
Leaning close, Mara’s gaze flickered unsettled, scanning the dim corners as if something lurked unseen. “But breaking in... if we’re caught—” Her voice broke on the last word.
“Death doesn’t scare me,” Elias cut in, voice low but steady. “What scares me is another tomorrow where the blood still stains the earth, where the gods’ will strangles any chance at freedom.”
A heavy silence fell again, thick with unspoken fears.
“We have to move fast,” Calen said. “Recon tonight. Gather what intel we can. I’ll map the patrols; Mara, you cover the eastern halls. Elias...”
He paused, eyes locking on Elias with a flicker of something unspoken, almost hesitation. “You stay central. Keep clear, but ready.”
Elias didn’t like being sidelined. Not now.
“I’m the one without magic. Close quarters is where I’m useful. I can slip past wards, dodge their senses.”
Mara nodded slowly, the flicker of mistrust weighing behind her eyes.
Calen’s jaw clenched. “Fine. But stick close. No lone heroics, Elias."
Beneath that ornate grit of command lay a fraying thread—something else skittering behind Calen’s ordered exterior. Elias caught it, a second too late, and a cold churn stirred in his gut.
Their plan formed like shards of shattered glass, fragile yet desperate. Tonight, they’d infiltrate the Oracle’s fortress. Tonight, shadows would become shields, and secrets weapons.
—
Moonlight bled through narrow slits in the rebel safehouse, casting jagged shadows across racks of worn maps and ink-stained parchments. The air tasted of dust and damp stone—a tangible reminder of the worlds lost, fought over, and yet to be claimed.
Elias traced a finger over the rough sketches Calen spread across the table, memorizing patrol routes and hidden corridors. Somewhere beneath this very ground lurked the Cache, its secrets locked behind wards and ancient spells.
A sudden soft step pulled his attention. Mara stood just out of lamplight, her jaw tight, eyes darting nervously.
“Elias... there’s something you need to know,” she whispered, voice trembling with rushed urgency.
He straightened, pulse lurching.
“There’s... talk. Whispers I caught in the market,” she pressed on quickly, nerves unraveling with every word. “Someone close to us. Someone with eyes in the Oracle’s halls.”
Elias stared, cold disbelief nipping at the edge of his mind. “Who?”
Mara’s gaze dropped; then she shook her head, swallowing hard. “I don’t want to believe it either. But the signs... subtle, impossible to ignore if you know what to watch for.”
Footsteps echoed suddenly—sharp and deliberate—from the upper gallery. Both froze, breath hitching in the thick air. A flick of movement against the flickering candlelight.
“Hide,” Elias hissed, dragging Mara behind a battered cupboard as the door creaked open.
Someone entered.
The silhouette paused, voice low but venomous: “They’re planning the assault tonight. I want every escape route sealed. No mistakes.”
Elias’ heart thundered like war drums. The voice—no, the familiar cadence—struck a cold shard through his ribs. Not just anyone.
He swallowed the rising panic, eyes narrowing. Each word was a blade slicing deeper.
As the figure retreated, Mara exhaled a shaky breath. “It’s Calen.”
The room spun—trust fractured with a single word.
Elias pressed a hand to his temple, a dry heat pulsing beneath his skin. If Calen was the shadow in their midst, the gods’ spies threading poison through their rebellion, everything teetered on the edge of ruin.
His jaw clenched, mind racing. A traitor close enough to unravel their fragile hope.
The coming night promised revelations—but also betrayal. And as the door shut softly behind footsteps fading into darkness, Elias knew the truth was a blade poised over his heart.
The game had grown deadlier.
And the shadows hiding their secrets were no longer safe.
