Chapter 16

A Forbidden Pact

The sudden, insistent knock tore through the heavy air like a blade, slicing the uneasy silence into sharp shards. Elias’s heartbeat slammed against his ribs, raw and unsteady, as if whatever waited beyond that door threatened to unravel more than his plans.

The chamber fell ominously quiet. The flickering torchlight danced off cracked stone walls, painting long, nervous shadows that twitched like restless specters.

“You heard it too,” Varek’s rasp echoed from the dark. His hulking silhouette shifted near the doorway, muscles taut beneath coarse leather. The clan chief’s single amber eye gleamed faintly—an unnatural glint only monsters possess.

Elias swallowed. The rough voice grounded him, yet the dread coiled tighter. The monstrous clan that guarded these forsaken borders were no allies—bargainers and betrayers steeped in blood and ancient grudges. To seek their weapons was perilous. To summon them so boldly even more so.

“Who—” Elias started, but the chamber’s heavy door groaned open with slow, deliberate care. Two figures slipped inside, cloaked in black woven shadows, faces obscured.

The stench of damp earth and iron clung to them like a second skin. No hesitation marked their intrusion—the kind of cold confidence bred in the wilds beyond the city’s laws.

Elias’s fingers brushed the hilt of his dull dagger, heart squeezed tight enough to silence reason.

“Well played, little human,” the taller visitor murmured, voice dripping silk and venom. His lips curved into a predatory smile beneath a hood of midnight scales.

Varek’s grip tightened on the hilt of his enormous axe. “Stark—don’t make this a bloodletting. We’re parleying, remember?”

Stark’s eyes glittered, smoldering embers reflected in the torchlight. “A parley that favors no one until sacred terms are met.”

Elias stepped forward, sudden resolve igniting through the trembling in his legs.

“I came to bargain. I want the Skybreaker.”

A stillness slammed into the room. The other figure—smaller, swifter—stepped forward, revealing cobalt skin gleaming faintly like frost under wan light. Her gaze pierced Elias, sharp as obsidian shards.

“Skybreaker,” she breathed, “the blade that sundered the realm during the last collapse.”

“It exists,” Elias steadied. “And I need it.”

Varek’s deep rumble broke, “That weapon hasn’t tasted air for centuries. Even speaking its name risks divine wrath.”

Elias met the frostbound eyes unflinching. “Divine wrath is what I’m here to challenge.”

Stark laughed low and cruel, like distant thunder. “Brave words from a powerless boy with gods breathing down his neck.”

The creature with cobalt skin, who Varek called Rylen, raised a hand. “The pact is ancient, and its price is not for the faint of heart. The Skybreaker demands a sacrifice.”

“Sacrifice?” Elias asked, voice barely steady.

Rylen’s gaze darkened, deepest blue swirling with shadows. “Not of blood or bone, but of mind. One must surrender their memories to wield the blade, even if only temporarily.”

A cold spike twisted deep inside Elias’s chest.

“Your memories?” His voice cracked, biting disbelief turning to panic.

“Everything stored in your mind—your past, your pain, your purpose. Bound to the Skybreaker’s will while you hold it.”

Varek’s gruff voice growled. “To lose your memories is to become a ghost. A shell willing the end of your own identity.”

Stark’s predator’s grin deepened. “And if you reclaim them? The blade’s bond will sever, and the price will be spent.”

Elias’s mind shuddered beneath the weight. The core of his rebellion—the memories from his past life, the secret knowledge of fate's traps—lay spread before him like delicate glass shards.

“Why would anyone barter this?” he whispered.

Rylen’s face softened, just for a heartbeat—vulnerable and ancient pain gleaming beneath her ethereal scales. “Because the power to overturn fate never comes without cost. The gods hold all threads, but the Skybreaker... the Skybreaker severs one.”

Varek’s hand rested briefly on Elias’s shoulder. “You’re standing on the edge of a blade sharper than the Skybreaker itself.”

For long seconds, the room filled with cold, suffocating silence.

Then Elias stepped closer to the strangers, resolve roaring louder than fear.

“I will pay your price.”

“Words,” Stark said, voice oily, “won’t bind the blade’s will. You must swear the pact in blood.”

Rylen withdrew from beneath her cloak a thin, ornate dagger gleaming with frost-bound runes.

With trembling hands, Elias reached out.

A single slash across his palm, a warn pulse of cold trickling down his veins—and the chamber’s shadows deepened as the pact was sealed.

But as the searing ache in his mind began to ripple out—blurred images pulling at the edges of awareness—Elias understood the true peril.

Because the Skybreaker did not just demand memory. It hungered to be the only voice within his mind.

And the battle for his soul was only beginning.

Suddenly, the heavy chamber door slammed shut with a deafening boom.

“Enough words,” Varek growled. “The gods must never learn of this union.”

Elias’s breath hitched. His memories flickered like waning stars, teetering on the brink.

In the silence that followed, the air trembled—not with magic, but with the dangerous quiet before a cataclysm.
