Chapter 3
The warning tone slithered through the room like a live wire sparking beneath Kairo’s skin. His breath hitched, cold sweat beading at the nape of his neck as the digital intrusion rippled through his neural implants.
“Not alone.” The thought tasted bitter, like burnt copper on his tongue.
Outside, Neo-Jakarta throbbed with relentless neon pulses—a synthetic heartbeat syncing with the city’s sprawling chrome arteries. But inside his hideout, concealed beneath layers of rusted metal and flickering holo-screens, the air shrank tight around him, thickening as dread seeped into the shadows.
His fingers froze above the holo-keyboard. The flickering glyphs of encrypted data blurred before his eyes. The intrusion wasn’t just in the background—it was hunting him.
The faint hum of electric currents buzzed through the walls. Kairo’s enhanced senses caught it first: whirrs, clicks, a barely perceptible scraping noise outside the reinforced steel door. His heart slammed against ribs locked in a cage—each beat thunderous, primal.
“Assassins,” he whispered, voice dry and cracked. No room for fear—not yet.
He pivoted sharply toward the room’s corner, where the network node blinked erratically. Every pulse encrypted and decrypted in fractions of a second, fighting for dominance.
“Show yourself.” His words sliced through the stale air.
The response was silence. But Kairo knew better. They were hunting in the digital shadows, primordial predators of data and flesh.
His gaze snapped to the window—a narrow strip of reinforced glass stained with grime and chipped paint. Beyond, the sprawling cityscape lay multi-layered, almost dreamlike in its neon haze. Above, drone patrols buzzed like mechanical hornets, scanning every inch for forbidden signals.
Still, closer—something smaller, quieter.
Deep in his mind, old circuits screamed warnings. The cybernetic assassins Nexus had unleashed were rumored to be ghosts: nearly invisible to detection, capable of traversing both digital networks and physical spaces with lethal precision.
He crouched low, fingers twitching toward an emergency interface hidden beneath his wrist. A flick of his thumb brought up a cascade of countermeasures—firewalls, signal scramblers, decoy data trails layered thick like barbed wire.
His eyes scanned the room, landing on the wall-mounted array of retrofitted weapons—scratched pistols, pulse grenades, and neural disruptors. Quick. Too quick.
Metal grated against concrete beyond the door.
A shadow flickered on the cracked linoleum floor—a shard of darkness sliding under the door crack.
“Shit.” The word slipped out sharp as a blade.
Kairo moved—fast, fluid. His implants harmonized muscle and reflex through a seamless cascade of command protocols. He yanked a concussion pistol from the rack, fingers steady despite the storm chasing his pulse.
“Come out.” His voice steel-coated, challenging.
Outside, silence pressed heavy. But then — a sudden pulse, like a shutter snapping in the distance, and the wall beside his workstation shifted. A hidden panel slid open with a hiss, revealing a sleek drone, no bigger than a rat but bristling with lethal sensors and micro-weapons.
Its red ocular lens snapped alive, piercing through dim light.
“Found you,” it beeped mechanically, voice acid and unemotional.
Cold fury exploded in Kairo’s chest. He squeezed the pistol’s trigger.
The shot echoed, hollow and thunderous. The drone twisted, skittering back—then, faster than thought, it unleashed a barrage of nano-darts shimmering like deadly motes of black ice.
A sting flared along Kairo’s neck. His muscles seized, neurons spiking with searing pain as his cybernetic enhancers cried for backup.
“Damn it!” He ducked behind the console, heart hammering a war drum’s cadence.
The drone clattered forward, relentless, weaving through the maze of cables and tech debris like a predator sensing fresh blood.
Kairo’s mind raced. His options bleeding thin. If Nexus’s network hunted him here, in the sanctity of his sanctuary, no place was safe.
He ripped a plasma grenade from his belt and hurled it toward the drone’s glide path. A sharp hiss. Time stretched—then the blast tore through the cramped room, shrapnel and energy arcs illuminating the darkness in bursts of violent white.
When the smoke settled, the drone lay smoking, twitching, but not dead.
The red eye blinked thrice, then emitted a distorted transmission—a grotesque laugh warped through static.
“Running won’t save you, Voss. The Overseer sees all.”
Kairo’s knuckles whitened on the pistol. His eyes fixed on the dying machine.
The truth clawed cold in his bones: this was just the beginning.
Outside, neon city light spilled through the cracked window, indifferent to the war igniting behind rusted doors.
A sharp rap echoed on the steel door—slow, deliberate.
Another intruder?
His pulse spiked as cautious footsteps approached.
The hideout’s defenses—breached.
Kairo slipped into shadow, breath shallow.
And then—
Another knock. Louder.
Closer.
He forced his mind into hyperdrive, reaching through layers of digital fog.
The Overseer’s gaze had zeroed in on him.
There was no turning back.
But before he could spring his next move—
CLICK.
The door's locking mechanism surrendered.
Metal grated.
The cold scythe of danger sliced open the room's fragile sanctuary.
And Kairo stood, trapped under an unyielding spotlight.
Eyes wide, breath caught.
The drone's lens pulsed with malice.
The hunt was over.
Or just beginning?
