Chapter 14
The acrid scent of burnt circuitry hung thick in the guttering air. Kairo’s heart hammered against the cage of his ribs, each beat rattling like a warning bell. The assassin dissolved into the swirling neon haze, a ghost vanishing beneath the endless rain.
He sagged against the cracked concrete wall, fingers trembling as they probed his left forearm. A jagged scratch—thin, but deep enough to trace an angry welt under his synthetic skin. Blood mixed with oil, thin and metallic, marking the night with a silent scream.
His breath stuttered, ragged and shallow, caught somewhere between disbelief and raw survival instinct. The assassin’s claws had sliced through the dim space just moments ago, carving time itself into shards of cold steel.
Every fiber screamed—move, escape, survive.
Ahead, the soaked streets of Neo-Jakarta sprawled like a restless beast, neon advertisements flickering off the rain-slick asphalt, a phantom orchestra of distant engines and digital static crackling beneath the city’s breath. Above, skyscrapers pierced the low-hanging clouds, their windows glowing with the cold gaze of surveillance drones.
Kairo pressed his forehead against the wall, eyes squeezed shut against the world that refused to sit still. His neural implant thrummed—a soft, persistent hum deep in his temple—the only tether to a fading hope.
"Not yet," he muttered, voice hoarse, bitter.
His fingers curled into fists, knuckles blanching white beneath synthetic skin. The assassin wasn’t just a threat—it was a message. Nexus was closing in. The days of running, hiding, and scratching at shadows could fracture like brittle glass any second.
Kairo swallowed hard and pushed off the wall.
The neon glow glistened off the rusted gratings beside a blocked alleyway. That was his path—a descent into the forgotten guts of the city: the underground tunnels buried beneath decades of decay and mechanized rebirth.
“Fixer said it’d be a maze,” he whispered to himself, tracing the rusted digits etched into the metal archway: Sector D-19.
With fingers slick and trembling, he heaved open the heavy hatch. It groaned, hinges protesting decades of neglect. The rush of damp, cold air ghosted across his face—stale, heavy, but alive with shadows.
From the grimy darkness below, a faint buzz threaded through the space—old power grids humming faintly, an electric pulse lost beneath time’s relentless crush.
The stairs creaked with each step, wooden planks and metal ribs groaning as Kairo descended into the black maw.
Light faded, replaced by a garden of phosphorescent moss and fractured LEDs embedded in the walls. Neon tubes flickered in rhythms forgotten by the surface—a lonely heartbeat in the subterranean veins of Neo-Jakarta.
A distant whisper. Something moved.
Kairo froze, breath caught between his lips like a fragile secret.
Then—nothing.
Just the shadow of his own steps echoing into the void.
He slid into an alcove, pressing shoulder to the cold steel. The air sucked the warmth from his body, seeping deep beneath layers of synthetic muscles and flesh. His breath wreathed in icy tendrils.
His neural implant flared—a sudden spike of encrypted data, pulsating against the throb in his temple. Kairo’s fingers jerked to his temple, eyes narrowing beneath dark lashes.
Distress signal.
A coded voice scrambled in static: “Kai... it’s me... trapped... Central Grid... override coming...need backup... they found me...”
The voice—a fractured echo. Too familiar.
Lina.
His sister’s name slammed into his mind like a physical blow.
Cold dread coiled in his gut, twisting tighter with every fragmented word.
“Lina,” Kairo breathed, voice cracked like shattered glass. The darkness in the tunnel swallowed his whisper whole.
His fingers flew over the control panel embedded in his arm—the makeshift decryption software scraped layers off the signal’s armor. Each second stretched thin, a wire pulled taut, ready to snap.
Static twisted the message—words blurred, urgency bleeding through the interference.
Then, the raw truth burned through the garbled noise—
“Nexus’s new program—reprogramming human minds—she’s the target. I’m trapped—don’t trust anyone—code is the key—find the node—before it’s too late...”
Kairo’s breath hitched. Around him, the tunnels shifted, shadows swelling in the peripheral corners like hungry beasts.
Someone was watching.
A faint scuffling in the darkness froze him mid-breath. His muscles coiled, magnetized by instinct.
"Show yourself."
His voice scraped the hollow pipe walls, sharp and low.
Only silence answered—then a metallic click.
Something heavy clattered behind him.
He spun—
His eyes locked on a shadow, contorting in the wavering neon. A sleek figure—a second assassin—emerging from the gloom like a viper coiling to strike.
Cold spikes of adrenaline roared across Kairo’s spine. He lunged sideways, heart pounding thunder in his ears, as the assassin’s blade slashed through the air—a cruel arc of steel seeking flesh.
Pain bloomed as the blade grazed his side—sharp, burning.
Grimacing, Kairo slammed the assailant’s wrist, twisting with a violent jerk that sent the attacker staggering. The metal slick with oil and sweat caught in the flickering light.
“Dead end,” the assassin hissed, voice a mechanical rasp, tone laced with cruel amusement.
“You got the wrong code,” Kairo spat, twisting his body to throw a solid blow into the attacker’s ribs. Bones cracked beneath the impact.
“Everyone has a code, Voss,” the figure countered smoothly, “yours just happens to be a virus.”
Kairo’s blood curtained his vision, the cold bite of his wound searing through the adrenaline storm.
But surrender wasn’t an option.
Grabbing a loose pipe from the wall, Kairo swung it hard, metal scraping against the assassin’s plated armor with a harsh clang.
The figure retreated, dissolving into the shadows, the echo of footsteps swallowed by the labyrinth beneath the city.
Kairo’s lungs tore with ragged gasps. Every fibre screamed, wounds burning, adrenaline and desperation mixing into a potent cocktail.
He steadied his breath, brain racing on the edges of collapse.
The encrypted distress call lingered in his mind, a fragile lifeline tangled in static.
Lina was alive.
And trapped.
A sharp rasp echoed from deeper within the tunnels—a sound like whispered life, or death inching closer.
Kairo swallowed grit and pushed forward, stepping into the pitch-black maze beneath Neo-Jakarta’s steel skeleton, where death was silent and shadows whispered secrets.
His neural implant blinked again—a surge of code streaming through his synapses.
The message replicated itself on the dark interface in his vision:
“Kai... don’t fail...”
Then—
The cold tunnel hummed—alive with the city’s forgotten pulse.
And somewhere, beneath the steel shadows, the war for their minds was just beginning.
