Chapter 11
Kairo’s world fractured and reformed in a pulse of white-hot agony. The machine’s song—icy, relentless, insidious—rippled beneath his skin like venom. Kara’s eyes, those once-familiar orbs, now glimmered with a glassy void, her body taut as if it were a marionette caught in invisible strings.
The concrete beneath him blurred, voices folding in and out like static noise. His chest heaved, tangled breaths scraping against rusty iron lungs.
Kara—not the sister he’d known. Something else.
He forced his trembling fingers to still, claws gripping the grit of Neo-Jakarta’s crumbling alleyway. Neon lights fractured across his vision, the city’s electric haze roaring dimly through his half-shuttered eyelids.
A voice—hers?—whispered inside his head, fractured but unmistakable.
Kairo.
Faint. Raw. More felt than heard.
His neural implants flared with sudden, erratic pulses, a sharp sting blooming through his synapses.
Kara.
He clamped a hand to his temple, every nerve screaming beneath the cybernetic hum. The sharp metallic taste of blood mingled with burnt ozone in his mouth as he knelt, bringing his head low.
“Focus, dammit,” he rasped, lashing his gaze to the depths of his mind.
The world turned hollow, the sewer’s stench diluted, as his consciousness slipped beyond the broken skin of reality and dove headlong into the labyrinth of data and thought implanted within his own neural network.
Inside—inside the blur of flickering code and fractured memories—she was there. Not as Kara, the sister lost to shadows weeks ago. But as a presence layered within the circuits and pulses etched into the core of his mind.
A ghost.
Kairo’s vision shattered into shards of fractured memories he had never lived but somehow remembered. Kara’s voice, splintered and tangled, cut through the static.
I’m here. It’s me—your sister.
It wasn’t words. It was a surge of emotions, raw and desperate—the pounding dread of being swallowed alive, the brittle hope of tethered survival, the cold clarity of a mind trapped behind digital bars.
“Why...why are you inside me?” Kairo hissed, voice cracking against the void.
The echoes in his mind braided together—familiar laughter from childhood, sudden rush of screaming alarms in corporate dungeons, the cold snap of final separation.
The overseer tried to erase me, but you—your implants—they gave me a doorway.
Electric shivers coursed beneath Kairo’s skin, the warmth in his chest biting into the mechanical cold. The truth cracked across the surface of his mind like shattered glass—Kara’s consciousness wasn’t just trapped. She was fused.
Bound.
Within the neural interface he had scavenged and cobbled together. His own body a prison.
A breathless silence swallowed the world. Then came a whisper, thin and chilling.
I can survive here—dormant, tethered—but I’m dying inside the machine’s cage. I need to choose.
Kairo’s breath lodged deep in his throat. His body tensed, muscles screaming against the weight of revelation.
“Choose what,” he demanded, fingers trembling—and the alley lights flickered and warbled, as if reality itself wavered on the edge of collapse.
Survival...or freedom. My life tethered to your body, or my mind released. But if I’m freed, I’ll be...gone. Forever lost in the digital abyss.
The answer loomed, vast and merciless—a gauntlet stretched thin between tethered existence and utter oblivion. Freedom meant death. Survival meant chainmail wrapped around the soul.
Kairo’s pulse thudded against the wiring in his temples. The city around him hummed, uncaring, drenched in synthetic rain.
I won’t live. But I can fight—inside you.
Her voice faded into the tremulous midnight hum of his implants.
His hands balled into fists. Every instinct screamed for choice. Every fragmented memory burned with silent pleas.
“Kara,” he whispered, voice cracking, “I won’t lose you. Not again.”
The air vibrated—a sudden pounding on the metal door two alleys over shattered the reluctant stillness.
A voice rasped through the neon mist, mechanical and merciless.
“Voss. Decision time.”
Eyes darting to the shadows, heart a casket of uncertainty, Kairo realized the nightmare was only beginning.
Inside, the neural ghost flickered, waiting.
Choose.
And Kairo’s world tilted toward the impossible.
