Chapter 5

Corporate Shadows

The neon rain slapped against her skin, a litany of cold needles burning through the soaked layers of her jacket. Kaia’s breath came in shallow gasps, each inhale dragging stale city air through cracked synthetic lungs. The whispered name from the darkness echoed inside her skull as she hunched beneath the flickering mesh of holographic ads—a graveyard of discarded ideals glowing above the grime.

She pressed her palm to the cold concrete, fingertips tingling as the microfractures bit against her cybernetic nerves. Somewhere beneath the slick shine of wet pavement, the city’s electric heart throbbed—a corporate beast fueled by greed and data, swallowing hope whole.

Kaia’s eyes darted through the labyrinth of alleys. Rain-slicked shadows rippled, cloaking figures in glitched anonymity. No one watched, or they pretended not to, eyes glued to their own spiraling voids of augmented distraction. A cracked voice hummed in her comm-link, distorted and fading, like a dying star’s faint pulse.

“Kaia…” It was Soren. Her makeshift anchor in this relentless storm.

“Status?” Her voice sliced through the static, brittle but whining inside her throat.

“RykerCorp’s data nexus — north tower, forty-seventh floor. Heavy patrols, biometric scans, but there’s a blind spot. Old service corridors, I patch you through the schematics.”

The words landed like cold steel on a pulling trapdoor in her chest. The Target — the pulsing core where the Awakenings came to life, where her name had turned from a whisper to a ghost.

Kaia slipped inside a narrow doorway guarded by rusting security cameras blinking like dead eyes. She tugged the collar of her jacket up, obscuring the pale network of veins that glowed faintly beneath her skin—a map of stolen tech and stolen identity.

Her augmented eye zoomed in on the facility layout, flattened like a circuit diagram projected against her irises. Every step was a calculated risk, every breath stolen from the city’s sucking maw.

The corridor reeked of burnt ozone and processed metal — the scent of corporate control squeezed from sterile ducts. A distant hum thrummed under the floor, vibrating through her bones like a warning growl. Kaia’s bare fingers traced the cold steel wall; she could almost taste the invisible fingerprints of surveillance seeping into the air.

Ahead, a guard’s shadow moved—a silhouette fractured by flickering strip lighting. She held her breath, timing the dance.

A breath. A step. Silence. Then—

—The guard passed, unaware.

Kaia’s pulse bounced against her ribs, drums in a cathedral of wire and glass. She ducked behind a rusted service panel, heart scrambling as soft footsteps neared again. The footsteps faded, swallowed by the oppressive hum.

She pulled a data shard from her pocket, glinting silver beneath the harsh neon. Fingers trembling, she sized the lock’s biometric scanner: retinal, fingerprint, voiceprint—multiple layers of ungraspable security.

“Time to see if they’re as foolproof as they say,” Kaia muttered, voice a rasp balanced between determination and doubt.

Data shard clinked against the scanner’s glass. A flicker of green. A silent rhythm of electronic pulses zipped beneath her skin, intertwining with cracked implants and synthetic alloys.

Access granted.

The heavy door groaned open, spilling sharp white light into the rusting corridor. Inside: a cathedral of servers, walls alive with blinking LEDs like constellations of artificial stars. The air felt electric, charged with secrets ready to bleed.

Kaia ducked beneath the tangle of cables, fingertips brushing against cold nodes humming with forbidden memory. A decrypted holo-screen flared to life, casting her face in blue ghostlight. Lines of code scrolled—a torrential river of data.

Her augmented eye parsed fragments: Awakening Protocol... neural mapping... control algorithm...

Each term ignited sparks of dread. The Protocol wasn’t simply a weapon—it was a leash, designed to ensnare every augmented mind, stripping free will down to code.

Suddenly, a muffled crack—the sound of distant footsteps multiplied, echoing closer in the hollow hum. The room’s overhead lights dimmed with a sharp buzz. Red emergency strobes flickered to life.

“Shit,” Kaia cursed, heart slamming. The security lockdown was closing in.

She dove behind a console just as the door hissed shut. Fingers scrambled over tangled wires, frantically uploading the decrypted data shard into her neural interface.

Static buzzed in her ear. A distorted chuckle tapped inside the comm-link—Lucien Ryker’s voice, cold and clipped, laced with venomous amusement.

“Running won’t erase the truth, Kaia. You’ve already been deleted.”

The words caught in her throat—an icy surge curling upward, paralyzing. Deleted. Erased. The notion spiraled, a black hole swallowing resistance.

Her eye glitched—an incoming file from security logs. She swiped it open just in time to see the damning footage.

There she was: a younger self, unaugmented, walking through RykerCorp’s doors years ago. But then—

Static glitches, then nothing.

Her image flickered and vanished, as if she had never existed.

“No...” Her voice cracked. “What the hell does this mean?”

The screen snapped off with a sharp beep. The room plunged into darkness.

Footsteps thundered at the door.

Kaia’s breath caught.

A shadow spilled across the threshold, towering and implacable.

The door lock clicked open.

No place left to hide.
