Chapter 13

Escape Protocol

Kaia’s lungs burned. Every ragged inhale drew razor shards of smoke and stale ozone into her chest, twisting her ribs like the skewers of a butcher’s blade. Her fingers cramped, still numb from the sweat-thin grip clenched around the cold metal of the jagged pipe she’d torn from the broken railing. She pressed her back against the grimy wall of the narrow alley, the stench of burnt wires and scorched metal filling her nostrils, thick and choking.

The neon above flickered, casting jagged shards of turquoise and crimson over her trembling shadow. Somewhere across the maze of the city, a siren howled—a long, low scream that crept beneath her skin like venom. They were closing in. She could feel it. Like the tightening spiral of a noose, cold and inevitable.

“Location confirmed. The ghost is cornered.”

Those words echoed in her mind, a merciless heartbeat hammering through her skull.

The mole’s slow, unreadable smile—like some dark promise etched into the screens she had glimpsed days ago—seared itself into her memory. She tasted bile. She was solo, stranded in a cage of steel and shadows, hunted like a phantom doomed to vanish.

But Kaia wasn’t done yet. Not by a long shot.

Her cybernetic eye flickered, the HUD overlay spitting fractured data. The scanning drones—those puckered orbs of ocular terror—buzzed overhead, slicing through the acrid night with thin blue lasers that stabbed the fog.

She forced her legs to move.

Pain blossomed in her thigh, sharp and sudden, but she didn’t stop. Sprinting blindly down the claustrophobic alley, the world a jagged blur of flickering signs and metal carcasses, she could hear booted footsteps pounding in synchronized rhythm behind her.

A voice snapped close, low and venomous.

“Kaia Voss, surrender. Ryker’s Protocol will overwrite your defiance.”

Her jaw clenched. Overwrite. Like a virus to be scrubbed from the network.

But the code inside her screamed against erasure.

Ahead, the alley spat out into a cluttered scrapyard, a graveyard of discarded mechanical limbs and shattered holo-ads, bathed in the pale yellow blur of leaking sodium lamps.

Kaia dove behind a mangled exoskeleton—a twisted heap of pistons and cables that had once been a guardian droid. Her breath came in ghastly bursts, steam escaping her mouth like cold ghosts.

Her fingers skimmed the rough steel beneath her, seeking the folding knife nestled in her waistband. Hands shaking, she yanked it free—the blade reflected the sputtering light. She dared a glance over her shoulder. Two figures loomed, their augmentations flaring—chrome plating gleaming, eyes flickering with predatory silver.

“Don’t make this harder than it has to be,” the foremost hissed, voice synthetic but laced with human malice.

Kaia pressed her back against the cold metal, closing her eyes for a split second. Then, resolve crystallized. She had one chance, one gambit left. The dormant code pulsing beneath her cortex, whispered fragments of the Awakening Protocol she barely understood.

Her fingers hovered over the neural implant at the base of her skull. The implant pulsed faintly, syncing with the flickering stutter of her heartbeat. A voice—a voice not hers—surfaced in her mind: Awaken. Break the chains.

The hunters closed in.

With a staccato breath, Kaia activated the interface.

A sudden electric hum rolled through her veins, cold and alive. The world tunneled, colors bleeding into impossible hues as the shadows stretched and crackled.

Her vision shuttered briefly—and then rewrote itself.

The first strike shattered the air where she had stood seconds before. She wasn’t there anymore.

She slipped through the fabric of the hunt, a spectral pulse unmoored from time.

But what emerged was something no one—not even Ryker—had anticipated.

Kaia’s lips parted in a silent scream as the code, wild and hungry, surged to the surface.

The city trembled beneath the shimmering fracture between ghost and machine.

And then the hunt became a desperate flight into the unknown.
