Whispers of Sabotage

The words hung between them, a razor thread stretched taut in the dim amber light of the penthouse study. Elijah’s gaze didn’t waver, sharp and unforgiving like the storm brewing beneath calm waters.

Aria swallowed hard, the air thick and bruised. Her fingers clenched the edge of the mahogany desk, knuckles pale. The silken hum of the city below seeped in through the floor-to-ceiling windows—a distant pulse of sirens, late-night laughter, sharp heels against concrete. But inside this room, the world had narrowed, focusing down to the clenched jaws and unsaid truths.

“Why didn’t you tell me before?” Elijah’s voice cracked just enough to betray the calm veneer. “About the accounts, the missing funds. You’ve been running in circles alone.”

Her mouth opened, then closed. A weight settled in her chest, heavier than the sleek gold cuff pressing cold against her wrist.

“I thought I could fix it,” she admitted, voice a brittle whisper. “Keep it quiet. Protect the family from—”

“From what? From reality?” He gestured sharply, eyes boiling now with betrayed fire. “Aria, this isn’t a game. The Montgomery legacy isn’t just your burden. It’s all of ours.”

Her heart hammered—a discordant rhythm trying to outpace the gathering storm of doubt.

She looked away, gaze dropping to the scattered spreadsheets glowing from her laptop. Rows of numbers and codes, one after the next—a jigsaw puzzle with missing pieces. Transaction after transaction, each one a whisper in the dark.

Then, a flicker caught her eye. A transfer... followed by a deletion.

Her breath quickened. Fingers trembling, she dove back into the data, scrolling with a sudden, desperate urgency.

The numbers didn’t lie. Months of funds diverted, masked as routine transfers to seemingly legitimate accounts. But the trail... the trail turned cold—or worse, deliberately obscured.

A mole.

In her family’s own empire.

“Someone’s trying to sink us,” she breathed, voice barely audible.

Elijah leaned over her shoulder, peering at the screen with mounting shock. “Sabotage,” he muttered. “Calculated, inside information. Precision attacks on our cash flow.”

“What do they want?” She clenched her jaw, the frustration sharpening like a blade against her ribs.

“More than just money,” Elijah said slowly, the wheels turning behind his eyes. “They want control. To twist the knife and watch the empire bleed from within.”

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Aria’s senses flared—every heartbeat thundered in her ears, breaths shallow and rapid like a trapped animal’s. Somewhere deep, a frost crawled up her spine, prickling cold with suspicion.

She forced herself to meet Elijah’s gaze. “Who could know this much? Not just Damien—someone closer.”

He frowned, lips thinning. “If someone’s inside, it means trust has been broken at the core.”

The weight of his words settled like dust over the room. Her mind raced through every conversation, every smile that felt less than genuine. The subtle shifts in alliances she’d ignored. The glances that lasted a beat too long.

“We need proof,” she said, voice unwavering despite the turmoil. “Names, motives—anything.”

Elijah nodded, eyes flashing with grim resolve. “I’ll get security tapping into the servers. We’ll trace every line. Find the leak.”

Suddenly, a sharp chime sliced through the stillness—a secure message pinged on Aria’s phone.

Her fingers hovered, dread coiling in her gut before she swiped it open.

Two words.

No sender.

They’re watching.

Her breath hitched, a cold pulse rippling through the blood beneath her skin.

Elijah’s eyes snapped to hers. “What is it?”

She swallowed hard. “A warning.”

Outside, the city glittered like a beast with a thousand eyes—beautiful, relentless, and merciless.

Someone wanted the Montgomery legacy to die.

But who?

The question hung, raw and bleeding, in the charged air between them.

And in the silence that followed, the answer was nowhere to be found.
