Chapter 5

An Unexpected Spark

The manor’s silence wrapped around Aria like a velvet shroud, thick and expectant. The faint crackle of the fireplace cast shadows flickering over Elijah’s sharp features, making his stoic mask seem less like armor and more like a thin veneer stretched dangerously tight.

Her fingers trembled slightly as she adjusted the cuff of her sleeve, heart drumming a cautious rhythm against her ribs. She caught a glimpse of her reflection in the tall mirror across the hall—wide eyes, flush creeping up her neck. The woman in the glass was not the cold negotiator she’d pictured herself being when she stepped into this gilded trap.

“Dinner’s ready,” Elijah said without turning, voice low and cool. The single syllable felt like a summons, breaking the fragile hush that had settled between them.

Aria stepped forward, heels clicking sharply on the polished marble. The dining room opened before them—a grand tableau of crystal glasses catching the firelight, silver cutlery sheathed in white linen, and a table set for two under a grand chandelier that spilled golden light like liquid honey. The scent of rosemary and roasted lamb mingled in the air, grounding her in the moment.

She wondered how often Elijah had hosted dinners like this—how many times his smile had been a weapon or a shield in corporate battlefields. Yet tonight, when his eyes briefly met hers as they sat down, there was a flicker of something unspoken, something raw and fragile.

Aria broke the silence first, clearing her throat. “You cook?”

A corner of Elijah’s mouth twitched, almost a ghost of a smile. “No. Private chef.” His gaze held hers a beat longer before flicking down to his glass. “But I’m used to the finer things.”

She searched his eyes then, looking for any sign of the ruthless titan rumored in whispered boardroom tales. Instead, there was a flicker of something else—a trace of weariness beneath the polished exterior.

“You don’t seem… entirely at home in this world,” she said softly.

He lifted a brow, the motion dangerously suggestive. “And you? It’s rare to see someone so… determined yet out of place.”

Aria’s smile faltered, then steadied. “I’m fighting to save my family, not to conquer an empire.”

Elijah leaned back, studyng her with sharp eyes that seemed to peel back layers instantly. “Sometimes saving your family requires more than battle lines and balance sheets.” His voice dropped another octave. “More than you might be prepared to give.”

The words hung between them, heavy and magnetic. Aria’s pulse quickened as the distance on the polished mahogany table seemed to shrink with each stolen glance. If she dared to look at him without the steel of contract and precaution, she might see beyond the billionaire’s mask. But danger lurked in familiarity. In him.

A gentle clink of silverware against the plate broke the spell. The private chef’s attention to detail was undeniable—each bite perfectly balanced between sharp tangs and hearty warmth. Aria allowed herself a tentative sigh, the tension in her shoulders easing just enough to breathe.

“You’re better at this than I thought,” Elijah said, voice layered with amusement and a trace of appreciation.

Their eyes locked again, the charged silence now fragile, electric. A page in this dance neither wanted to admit was being written.

“So,” Aria ventured, “what’s your secret?”

A laugh—quiet, dry, but unmistakably real—escaped Elijah’s lips. “Secrets make the world spin, don’t they?”

He reached across the table, not touching but close enough that the heat from his skin brushed hers. “We both have our reasons—for the parts we hide, the games we play.”

The pulse in her throat throbbed. The contract was a cage, yes, but also a tenuous rope pulled taut between two people who wanted to escape alone—and yet found themselves bound.

Elijah’s voice softened, “Tell me one truth, Aria, just one. Something real beneath the masks we wear.”

Her breath caught. To confess would be to lower the walls she’d built brick by brick, to risk more than just the future of her family. But the weight of the lie, the charade, clawed at something inside her—a desperate need to be seen.

“I’m scared,” she whispered, the word bare and exposed in the hushed light.

For a fleeting moment, the mask slipped. Elijah’s eyes darkened, shadows gathering there—not with mockery or power, but something... unexpected. Something fragile.

“Good,” he said. “Fear sharpens focus. It makes us dangerous.”

The word settled between them like a promise or a threat.

A sudden knocking rattled the front door, sharp and deliberate, slicing through the fragile bubble they shared.

Elijah’s head snapped up, eyes narrowing.

Aria’s breath hitched.

Can sparks ignite between two people bound by a contract—or will the secrets waiting out there shatter them both?
