Chapter 6
The door eased wider, its muted creak slicing through the tense pulse in the room. The slender silhouette framed by the dim hallway light froze Stella’s breath, sharp and stuttering against the walls of her ribcage. Not who they expected, no—but who exactly did she—or Damon—expect right now?
The figure stepped inside, the edges of a knowing smirk twitching on impossibly red lips. A woman, no older than Stella herself, but with the composure of a seasoned predator. The kind of predator you’d never spot until the bite hit. Her eyes caught the low light and gleamed like polished obsidian stones.
“Enjoying your little secret rendezvous?” she purred, voice dripping with venom behind a velvet laugh.
Damon’s eyes narrowed instantly, the rigid lines of his jaw tightening as he rose from his seat with an ease that belied the slow-burning threat beneath.
Stella’s fingers palmed the hidden clasp beneath her purse. Her heartbeat an erratic drum against her temples. Who was she? What did she want?
“Lena,” Damon’s voice sliced through the room, terse and cold like a gust cutting through velvet curtains. “I didn’t expect to see you here.”
Lena stepped further inside, heels clicking on the polished floor—a metronome of tension. “Expectations rarely align with reality, do they?” Her gaze slid over Stella like a surgeon’s scalpel, calculating, cold, dangerous. “Especially when reality’s crafted from fragile lies.”
Stella caught the unspoken barb—fragile lies. Did the bones beneath their carefully constructed truth creak so loudly?
“Are you here to join the party or just to haunt the shadows, Lena?” Damon’s voice carried a razor’s edge now, the room’s air thickening with unsaid bitterness.
With a dexterous hand, Lena pulled out a slender phone, its screen glowing ominously in the dim. She tapped, swiping through images—a silent accusation reverberating through pixels: photographs with precise timestamps and glimpses of meetings that were meant to be invisible.
“Curious how someone might put together the pieces,” she said softly, almost sweetly. “Or how quickly secrets unravel when the spotlight turns.”
Stella’s breath hitched. What did she know? What had Cyrus set in motion?
Damon’s smile twisted—part warning, part resigned acceptance. “Be careful, Lena. Some stones, once overturned, unleash more than dust.”
The tension twisted tighter as the sharp sound of heels approached from the hallway—interrupting the moment like a sudden snap in a taut wire. The door clicked shut behind whoever strode in now, pulling all eyes toward the grand entrance that led out to the high-society gala.
Stella felt the shift immediately. All pretense of privacy was vaporizing, replaced by the weight of a thousand curious gazes.
Damon’s hand found hers under the table—a grounding pulse—an unspoken vow.
“Ready?” he murmured, voice low but charged.
She nodded, squeezing back, feeling the sharp press of silk against her palm.
Together, they rose.
The entrance to the grand ballroom yawned wide, chandeliers glittering like fractured stars overhead. The murmur of elite voices, clinking glasses, the soft rustle of haute couture created an almost hypnotic rhythm.
But beneath the enchanting veneer, Stella could sense the brittle edges—the stares not probing admiration, but suspicion. Hushed whispers undulating like an undercurrent beneath each polite laugh.
The flash of camera bulbs ignited as they stepped in, Cyrus’s name already leaking into the ether, tethered to their union like a poison thread.
A man in a sharp tuxedo offered a cold nod. “Ms. Hayes, Mr. Damon, the press is eager to hear your thoughts on this sudden... alliance.”
Stella’s smile clipped but genuine—a fragile armor. “We believe in new beginnings.”
The camera bulbs stuttered out, but the intensity didn’t fade.
As they navigated the sea of tuxedos and gowns, Stella’s gaze caught someone slipping away—a shadow melting behind gilded pillars.
Then, as they passed beneath a towering fresco, a barely audible whisper tickled the edge of her hearing.
“She’s nothing but a calculated pawn.”
Stella’s pulse jerked. She spun, scanning the crowd.
Eyes met hers, sharp with malice. A slender woman draped in iridescent jade lace, lips curling into a venomous smile.
Before Stella could react, the woman slid past, disappearing into the crush.
Damon’s breath brushed her ear, low and tight: “Watch closely. Your enemies wear smiles like masks here.”
Stella swallowed the sudden dry ache in her throat.
Who whispered those words?
And what did they want her to believe?
